Description:
Singapore: NUS Press, 2018. Reprint. Paperback. New. The book, originally published in 1931, purports to be the autobiography of a plainclothes Malay policeman recruited from boyhood to work undercover. In the introduction the author says he withholds his name to protect himself and others and yet there is apparently a photo of the diminutive author standing next a towering Englishman as the frontispiece. The writing style is also obviously of a native English speaker. That said, the book gives an interesting insight to undercover police work in Malaya before the First World War, in the first World War in France and then back in Malaya tackling the beginnings of Communism. This reprint includes a foreword by Paul Kratoska and an introduction by Philip Holden, where they reveal the unmasking of the identity of the author many years after his death. xxi and 162 pages.
