Orson Welles. Typed Letter SIGNED with a doodle. on Hotel Esplanade stationery, 4to, Zagreb, Yugoslavia, undated but ca.1960. Welles plans to produce two unknown plays but feels overlooked by reviews of Ionesco's "Rhinoceros." Welles ends this exceptional letter with a doodle. To Leonard Lyons, the New York Post critic, and long time friend. "Dearest Lennie, Here's our news: Paola, Beatrice and Rebecca are in the Austrian Alps. As soon as I'm done with this dreadful picture we're joining up for a few weeks in Spain. We'll be following Ordonez [bull fighter], which means the south for the first ten days of September. I was in Valencia for the feria and for a few more of Antonio's dates after that...After Spain--? Probably London. Somebody sent me a really good play from America called ‘The Guide', and I expect to be producing it in London either before or just after the pantomime season... Also, there's a play of my own called ‘Brittle Glory'. If I can cast it right, I'll be doing that, too. For…

Description:
CHURCHILL, WINSTON. Nine days after the Allied invasion of France, this official British press photograph of Churchill was taken. Churchill in dark clothing stands between Field Marshal Alan Brooke and General Bernard Law Montgomery at Montgomery's headquarters in France. South Africa's Prime Minister Jan Smuts stands last on the other side of Montgomery. The news service stamp on verso is Acme NewsPictures with the usual warnings of republication without crediting the news service. The photograph measures 7 x 9 inches and is in very good condition with one small break in the top border at the center not affecting the image. The attached press caption on aged and brittle paper has deteriorated into several readable pieces. "Talked out of accompanying the first wave of invaders to the shores of France, Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited the Allied beachhead in Normandy as soon as he possibly could." Credit for the photograph goes to "British Official Photo from Acme" with the date…

Description:
Wiener Werkstatte artist Mela Koehler has drawn a Pen and Ink Sketch on fine mesh paper attached to a board with measurements for reduction written in pencil along edges. A charming whimsical image of a fantasy figure in a tree playing a flute like instrument to a large pleasing bird, all designed - including the tree - in Wiener Werkstatte style. Koehler has signed in the lower left corner with her squared signature, "Mela Koehler." An intriguing and appealing image, beautifully framed in black wood with cream detail so that the drawing appears set into the frame with archival black mat and conservation glass . Frame measures 14 x 16 inches, image measures 8 x 9 1/4 inches. The drawing is framed close to its black border drawn in ink. The drawing itself is slightly uneven so that the black ink border is framed over at one point. A fine ensemble evoking the Wiener Werkstatte style. Autograph

Description:
Homer drew this sketch of a Confederate officer in pen and ink on lined paper, The officer is presented in full uniform, pistol attached to his belt with a belt buckle initialed, "CSA.. He appears to be set against a background of smoke from which emerge bayonets. Homer signed in full with place and date, "WInslow Homer, New York, March 4, 1869." Ironically, or perhaps intentionally, Homer drew his sketch on the day of General Ulysses S. Grant's inauguration as U. S. President. The page measures 4 x 7 inches with the drawing including signature measuring about 5 inches. During the American Civil War, Homer painted scenes depicting battles and camp life. After the war, he turned to the realistic paintings he is most associated with. Homer has been regarded as the greatest of the American water colorists, especially of seascapes and landscapes.
