The cartoon is subtitled "(Design for an Admiralty Christmas-Card.)" In the cartoon, Churchill is depicted as a cloud-borne cherub dispensing a huge bag of money above the banner "I'm the sweet little Cherub that sits up aloft | To keep watch o'er the life of poor Jack." The issue is of increased pay for common seamen ("Jack"). Of note, Churchill bought the original drawing from the cartoonist, who wrote to Churchill to thank him for his 10 guineas. Description:
London: Red Cross & St. John Fund, circa 1941. Poster. This original poster from early during the Second World War testifies to both the British wartime alliance with Russia and the important role played by Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s wife, Clementine, in rallying material and moral public support for that wartime alliance. This circa 1941 poster measures roughly 20 x 30 inches (50 x 75 cm). Printed in blue, black and red on thin white stock, the poster is both striking and perishable. This is the first copy we have offered. The image is of a sailor clambering into a life raft below the printed headline “HE DIDN’T HESITATE TO FACE EXTRA DANGERS” (with “EXTRA” in red print). The image was topical given the tremendous shipping losses to U-boats, the cost of sustaining Britain - and of Britain sending material aid to Russia. Centered below the image is a large white box with black print “WILL YOU GIVE AN | EXTRA PENNY EACH WEEK | TO THE RED CROSS | & ST. JOHN?” The “EXTRA” in red… Read More

This cartoon titled "WINSOME WINNIE.” appeared thus on p.160 of the 28 February 1912 issue of Punch. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. At the time, Winston had just lent support to a peace mission to Berlin headed by Minister of War Richard Haldane. The mission failed when Germany demanded that in exchange for building fewer warships, Britain must promise to remain neutral if Germany was in engaged in any war in which it was not the aggressor. The explanation offered for the cartoon is "Winsome Winston since he genially backed up the War Minister's mission of peace to Berlin by describing the German Fleet as a luxury, a sort of extra glass of… Read More

The cartoon is captioned "Unless our Artist's eyes played him false during a hasty visit to Portsmouth, it would appear that the Service is already coming under the Influence. The eager, impetuous, lunging crouch which has developed in the Naval circles during the last few days could have but one origin. (Please note also the advent, on the right, of the new 'Bantam' cocked hat, which is plainly a flattering imitation of Mr. Churchill's world famous Midget-Homburg. Description:
Kingsport, Tennessee: Kingsport Press, 1943. First and limited edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This extremely scarce wartime speech pamphlet publication of Churchills 11 November 1942 speech to the House of Commons was a limited edition of only 400 copies. According to Churchills bibliographer, Ronald Cohen, as early as 1953 noted Churchill collectors were already looking for copies and unable to find them. This is a lovely publication, pale blue textured card wraps with folded flaps bound in white string, the speech printed on 32 pages with generous margins. The binding measures a substantial and nicely proportioned 8.25 x 5.25 inches (21 x 13.3 cm). Condition of this copy is very good . The wraps binding is complete with no appreciable wear, the only observed defect being a quite faint, unobtrusive roughly 3 x 4 inch (7.6 x 10.2 cm) ovoid stain on the blank rear cover. If not for this faint stain, we would grade this copy as better than near fine. The contents are immaculate apart from an inked… Read More

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1952. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is Volume II only of the first edition, first printing of the three-volume "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, published during Churchill's second and final premiership. This second volume contains speeches spanning 25 June 1941 to 6 September 1943. After Churchill returned to 10 Downing Street in October 1951, the publisher reissued the seven War Speeches volumes as a new, three-volume edition. This edition is, in many ways, superior to the original seven wartime editions in both aesthetics and content. Gone is the cheap economy paper of the wartime editions. The binding is a heavy navy cloth with attractive, uniform dust jackets. The books each measure a substantial 10 x 6.25 inches. New speeches are added, as is a helpful index. Description:
London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1941-1946. First edition, first printings. Hardcover. This full, seven-volume set of British first edition, first printings of Winston Churchill’s Second World War speeches offers a vanishingly rare trifecta of virtues. First, the set as a whole is unequivocally the finest we have ever encountered. Second, the presentation volume therein – the seventh and final volume – is equally fine, magnificently well-preserved. Third, the presentation volume is not only signed by Churchill, but inscribed, dated, and accompanied by and signed presentation letter from Churchill, providing definitive and compelling provenance. The presentation inscription, letter, envelopes, and cards Secret Session Speeches is inscribed by Churchill in five lines on the half title: “To | Denny C. Stokes | from | Winston S. Churchill | Christmas 1947”. An accompanying typed letter signed by Churchill on his Hyde Park Gate stationery is dated “December 8, 1947” and reads: “Dear Mr. Stokes,… Read More

This is the quite scarce U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches in both dust jackets and the extremely rare publisher’s slipcase – only the fourth set we have offered thus and definitively the best-preserved set we have encountered. Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is the second volume of the U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner. But more than anything else, it was Winston Churchill's leadership during the Second World War that made him a preeminent historical figure. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1952. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing of the three-volume "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, a presentation set inscribed by the compiler, Charles Eade, to newspaper magnate Viscount Rothermere. The six-line inked inscription on the Volume One front free endpaper recto reads: "To | Viscount Rothermere | From | the Compiler | Charles Eade | September 3, 1952.” This set is triply compelling – for condition, as a Compiler’s presentation copy, and for its recipient, an important Churchill association. Condition is near fine in near fine dust jackets. The blue cloth bindings are square, clean, and tight with only trivial shelf wear confined to extremities. The contents are likewise notably clean, with no spotting and no previous ownership marks apart from the presentation inscription. The dust jackets are unclipped and complete, with no losses – only light soiling and barely discernible color shift… Read More

Description:
Taipei: Zhuo Liu quing Di and Xinyue Books Co., Ltd, July 1964. Hardcover. Here is a full, jacketed set of three volumes of the pirated Taiwanese edition of Churchill's war speeches. Originally issued in 1951 when Churchill returned as Prime Minister, the definitive 3-volume British edition of Churchill's War Speeches was superior to the original 7 wartime editions in both content and aesthetics. Consolidated into three uniform volumes, the set also added five speeches and a helpful index. The British first editions measured a substantial 10 x 6.25 inches (25.4 x 15.9 cm) with attractive, uniform dust jackets. As was the case with many postwar British editions of Churchill's works, this set appeared in an unauthorized, copyright violation Taiwanese edition. This edition was photo-reproduced in 1964 from the Cassell edition of 1951. Although the contents are photo-reproduced (with all references to the publisher excised) and the dust jacket is of nearly identical content and appearance, there are… Read More
