Description:
London: Boydell, 1819. Hand-coloured aquatint, 280 x 410 mm., Whatman paper with 1819 watermark; very good. Arresting image of the Tahitian chief Waheiadooa (Vehiatua) lying in state. Cook recorded in August 1777 that his curiosity had taken him to view what his fellow officers had described as a "Roman Catholic Chapel", but which he discovered was what was known as a Tupapau in which the remains of Vehiatua were laid; the body, Cook was told, had been there for some twenty months. The structure, beautifully realised in Webber's view, resembled a small neat house decorated with coloured cloth and mats, including a large piece of scarlet broad cloth which had been given to the Tahitians by Spanish missionaries. The plate was issued as one of Webber's Views in the South Seas. Following Webber's death in 1793 the publisher Boydell purchased the majority of his stock at auction and continued to colour and sell the views. A new edition was issued around 1808, this time as… Read more

Description:
Sydney: The Author, 1885. Some scattered spotting, expertly rebacked, edges bumped but a good copy.. Folio, lithographic dedication, title and envoi, and 20 lithographs; original publisher's half morocco. One of the rarer nineteenth-century illustrated Australian books in a handsome Sydney binding by W.E. Smith. A journalist, Whitelocke was born in London in 1861. It is not clear when he arrived in Australia but he entered journalism in the 1880s and was editor of the Barrier Miner and the National Advocate; he also wrote for the Sydney Mail and other papers. His social sympathies and his often satirically observant eye are obvious from this series of Mayhewesque images of Sydney city life. As Whitelocke himself comments in the advertisement to the work, the idea was prompted by a Sydney Morning Herald review of his 24 original sketches from the works of Charles Dickens (1882): the editors applauded the sketches, but openly wondered why the artist did not stay closer to home, as 'Sydney… Read more

Description:
London: Published by J. Sowerby & Co, 1793. Hand coloured engraved plate, 235 x 170mm, mounted and in a handsome nineteenth century timber frame. This superb image, 'the most magnificent plant which the prolific soil of New Holland affords is, by common consent both of Europeans and Natives, the Waratah. It is more over a favourite with the latter, upon account of a rich honeyed juice which they sip from its flowers." (Smith) The engraver James Sowerby was a natural historian and artist, he collaborated with James Smith (1759-1828), one of the first botanists to work on the plant specimens sent back to England from the new colony. In 1793 Smith and Sowerby produced the first publication devoted to Australian flora, A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland. This was the first time that the Waratah was described and Edwards gave the species its original binomial name, Embothrium speciosissimum. Interestingly Edwards notes that this engraving was drawn from a coloured drawing made from the… Read more

Description:
Paris, 1826. In fine condition.. Early proof plate before letters and number; manuscript caption and notes, bold ink note with instructions to engraver. Early stage of an important engraving from the official account of Louis de Freycinet's voyage in the Uranie and a remarkable image, engraved after the voyage artist Jacques Arago's depiction of a Papuan. The expedition spent some time in Papuan waters and several weeks between the small islands of Waigeo and Rawak: the native of Waigeo island is depicted as a noble figure, complete with bone hair ornament, but stricken with a type of leprous ailment endemic to his region. Freycinet, closely involved with every stage of the preparation of his voyage account, has annotated the proof engraving in bold ink with instructions to the engraver: "The general tone of this engraving is too dark; moreover the engraver hasn't succeeded in depicting the effect of the disease that the drawing represents and which has to be indicated by the… Read more

Staffordshire: Wedgwood, 1790. Spout has been abraded, small hairline crack to the rim, generally in very good condition.. Ceramic creamware jug with world map printed on two sides, stands 186mm tall with a diameter of 90mm;. Charming late 18th-century Wedgwood printed jug displaying a world map which includes recent discoveries in the Pacific and east coast of Australia. The jug was clearly produced after the third voyage of Captain Cook as the Hawaiian islands are marked on the map, which features Australia divided into New Holland and New South Wales, the latter still connected to Van Diemen's Land. An imaginary southern land is partially depicted as an incomplete island named 'Terra Australis' southwest of the Cape of Good Hope and directly south of Tristan de Cunha. New Zealand is depicted with the Cook Strait clearly marked, as are many of the smaller Polynesian groups such as Tahiti and the Solomon Islands. Description:
The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1952. Very good.. Quarto, unopened, in blue boards; blind embossed printer's device on front board. First edition: an elegant monograph on utopia. This thesis on the development of economics in the English Utopia gives priority to key works such as Bacon's New Atlantis, but also includes chapters on less studied works such as Hartlib's Macaria and Mandeville's Fable of the Bees. In his attractive introduction to the subject, Fuz delineates the economic utopia, whilst alluding to the intangible impetus that utopian writing has provided. Thus, whilst critical of many of the individual works, throughout he is committed to his general statement: 'Utopia is a 'state of mind' and is necessary as an intellectual attitude, as a stimulus to further development or action; and it is always corrective of existing society.' Using this sophisticated sense of the utopia as stimulus rather than manifesto, he concludes 'In spite of their theoretical… Read more

London: J.H. Bohte, 1838. Very good.. Engraved plate with contemporary handcolouring, 280 x210mm. The graceful Sydney honey-eater engraved by Australia's first professional artist John Lewin, who arrived in the colony in 1800 and established himself as our first natural history illustrator. Aside from being Australia's first natural history publisher, Lewin was an intrinsically skilled naturalist: 'The bibliographical and historical importance of Lewin has been emphasised in recent years, but Lewin the naturalist has been somewhat neglected...[his renditions] are highly competent and show the mind of an excellent observer. Lewin's birds are correct; the feather detail, legs, particularly the positioning of the toes, posture of the bird, the understanding of male and female plumage, the interactions between male and female are accurate and show a keen observer at work. The other important detail in Lewin's illustrations are the plants: they demonstrate an observer who is familiar… Read more

Description:
London: Fisher Son & Co, 1834. Engraving, 230 x 145mm (plate size). Fine portrait of the great botanist as a young man. Hooker was born at Norwich in 1785. Following his father's fascination with exotic plants, he showed a precocious interest in botany and in 1809, through the encouragement of Sir Joseph Banks, made an expedition to Iceland. In 1815 he married the daughter of the brewer and botanist Dawson Turner, and settled at Halesworth in Suffolk. In these years he laid the foundations of his personal collection (including species recently discovered in Australia) which later formed the genesis of the Herbarium at Kew. In 1820 Hooker was appointed Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow, where he lectured while increasing both university and personal collections through his wide range of contacts throughout the colonies. Hooker's fascination with exotic plants coincided with the settlement of the east coast of Australia. He cultivated close relationships with… Read more

London: G. Garrard, 1811. In very good condition overall.. Original aquatint, stipple, etching and engraving; 540 x 800 mm., mounted and framed. A large detailed and striking image of the annual sheep shearing festival held by the Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey, with Sir Joseph Banks a resplendent figure in the foreground. This great agricultural show was started by Frances Russell (1763-1802) who established a model farm at Woburn with 'every convenience that could be desired for the breeding of cattle and experiments in farming'. This included valuable experiments upon the respective merits of the various breeds of sheep. The sheep shearing exhibitions lasted for days and the whole English agricultural world was invited to this splendid event; the week concluded with banquets for the Duke's numerous guests staying at Woburn Abbey. The scene shows an enormous crowd of noblemen, gentlemen, farmers, and agricultural labourers inspecting the numerous sheep and cattle whilst a shearing… Read more

1890. Fine, in the original frame.. Oil on canvas, signed lower right 920 x 490 mm, in original Melbourne frame. This large and attractive oil painting is in the original timber frame with the label of the Melbourne maker, W. & C. Dean, Collins Street on verso. It is skilfully painted in the British Orientalist style showing an attractive young lady seated in a picturesque Orientalist interior taking a break from her book. Romanticism in such exotic settings was a favourite genre of nineteenth century artists, a style highly influenced by the poetry of Lord Byron. Lionel J. Cowen, (1847-1895) was born in Jamaica and subsequently studied and painted in London becoming a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He exhibited for the first time in 1869 at the Suffolk Street Gallery and frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy.
