Original uniform printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen complete copy. The appendices 1-6 were published separately, and are much larger. Appendices 7-9 are in the rear of the text volume. especially the portfolio with the fine maps is rarely seen. Text volume well-illustrated. Damp stain to the upper left corner of the portfolio and upper margin of the text volume; cancelled stamp in the top margin of the title page; label on spine, otherwise very good, clean. The beautiful maps and text pages in pristine condition.

Carlsruhe, Gottlieb Braun, 1825. 8vo (20.3 x 12.2 cm). xii, 320 pp., one folded chart, eight folded engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Edges red. = Rare and important work on volcanology with detailed information on the various volcanic minerals. The folded chart contains a list of volcanos arranged according to continent with their name, height, and the name of the person who had measured this. Old stamp in the title page lower margin, and an incription on the same page top margin, otherwise a very good copy. Ward and Carozzi, 2208.

The plate shows four maps of the earth, with meteorological data. Offprint from the Archiv des Vereins der Freunde der Naturgeschichte in Mecklenburg 56; not a reprint. Lacks front wrapper, small former owner's stamp in top margin of the title page, otherwise very good. Rare.

This is the Academy's Proceedings, volume XXVI, with several unrelated paper, including the following on Mollusca: Yen, T. C. (1948). Notes on land and freh-water mollusks of Chekiang province, China (31 pp., plate); Smith, A. G. and M. Gordon (1948). The marine mollusks and brachiopods of Monterey Bay, California, and vicinity (99 pp., two plates, 4 text figures). Both with several new species. Stamp on front pastedown and lower margin of the general title page, otherwise clean. A very good copy.

These four parts are all in the first edition, which is rarely seen. Some marginal chipping to the dust jackets, but mostly in very good condition.

Original printed wrappers. = This work by the German geologist, geographer and Nazi pseudoscientist, Siegfried Passarge (1866-1958) deals mainly with the physical geography of Algeria. Published for the Hansische Universität in their series of Abhandlungen aus dem Gebiet der Auslandskunde, Band 52, or: Reihe C: Naturwissenschaften, Band 14. A four pp. publisher's catalogue included in the rear. Uncut. Wrapper edges chipped, as usual when still uncut. Otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Contemporary grained half cloth over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. = This volume consists of two parts, with separate pagination and plate numbering. Includes the Beiträge zur Meeresfauna von Helgoland, with chapters on fish, molluscs, copepods, coelanterates and pelagical protozoans and rotifers; as well as a similar work, Beitäge zur Fauna der südöstlichen und östlichen Nordsee (i.e. the same region), dealing with sponges, echinoderms, Bryozoa, Copepoda and Cladocera. Boards rubbed at edges, old stamps on front free endpaper recto and title, otherwise a very good copy.

Later 20th-century half cloth over pattered boards. Gilt title on the spine. = A seldom seen work, principally by the German zoologist, and founder of the zoology department of the university of Rostock, Franz Eilhard Schulze (1840-1924). "Xenophyophores are multinucleate unicellular organisms found on the ocean floor throughout the world's oceans, at depths of 500 to 10,600 metres (1,600 to 34,800 ft). They are a kind of foraminiferan that extract minerals from their surroundings and use them to form an exoskeleton known as a test. They were first described by Henry Bowman Brady in 1883. They are abundant on abyssal plains, and in some regions are the dominant species. Fourteen genera and approximately 60 species have been described, varying widely in size. Contemporary (original?) printed cloth with gilt title on the spine and front board. = Deals with the plants of Central Africa from Lake Albert and Victoria to the Bangweolo. Inscribed by the publisher (Von Rosen?) on the first blank to, suprisingly, the Swedish architect Ivar Justus Tengbom (1878-1968) "one of the best-known representatives of the Swedish neo-classical architecture of the 1910s and 1920s" (Wikipedia). Light wear to spine top; first few leaves with some vertical creasing, otherwise a very good, clean copy. The later (1921) published Ergänzungsheft is not included. Not in Stafleu and Cowan.

Original printed wrappers. = The zoological results of this lesser known expedition to a little explored region were published in two volumes, of which this is the second. It contains 16 papers, of which 12 on various entomological - mostly coleopterological - groups (e.g. Borchmann on various cantharid groups, Gebien on Tenebrionidae, Weise on Coccinellidae and Chrysomelidae, etc., and Attems on "Myriopoden", Jacobi on Homoptera, Karny on Thysenoptera, Strand on Arachnida, covering 150 pages, and so on). Also with two (large) papers of herpetological interest, namely on Amphibia by F. Nieden, occupying pp. 165-196, and one plate, and by R. Early 20th-century half cloth over marbled boards. Speckled edges. = Rarely seen. Contains: A. O. Kihlman, "Pflanzenbiologische Studien aus Russisch Lappland, ein Beitrag zur Kenntnis der regionalen Gliederung and der polaren Waldgrenze"; V. Brotherus and T. Saelan, "Musci Lapponiae Kolaënsis"; C. Sanio, "Die Harpidien des nördlichen Finnlands sammt Kola"; A. O. Kihlman, "Neue Beiträge zur Flechten-Flora der Halbinsel Kola". In other words, all contributions are botanical, none is zoological. This expedition gathered information about the then still completely unknown inner part of the Kola Pensinsula, between the White Sea and the Arctic Sea. Cloth spine with printed orange paper strip. = One of the rarer parts of the Valvdivia expedition results. This work by one of the most influential German zoologists and malacologists, Emil Karl Hermann Johannes Thiele (1860-1935) contains many new species. The descriptions and illustrations on large plates are excellent. This is the second part of the Mollusca, dealing exclusively with gastropods. The first part (number VII, 1 of the series), written by Von Martens and Thiele, dealing with other molluscs, is not included here. An excellent clean copy.

Purple endpapers. = Covers shooting expeditions to the Chinese Yangtze (or Yangzi) River valley and its shores and inland areas. Detailed information is given on hunting dogs, boat life, game birds, topography, etc., etc. With interesting accounts on the trapping of ducks in the river, and a chapter on Chinese methods of shooting and trapping game, among others. Lists of animals (species and - astonishing - numbers) killed by various shooting parties between 1875 and 1909 are also included. A much better than average copy, if not the best one currently available. Includes a lengthy index. Errata slip tipped in opposite p. 108. Some very light shelf wear, some minor spotting to the endpapers and a faint bump to some leaves. This may be a first printing, with the title on the front board in a special, oriental-style font. Contemporary dark green diced morocco; spine with four raised, gilt-ornamented bands, and green morocco label with gilt title. Boards with gilt-lined and blind-tooled borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. = This work was initially written by Charles Wodarch (years of birth and death unknown) and published by John Mawe in 1820 (with four plates), and went through several reprints up to 1827. The British explorer and malacologist John Mawe (1764-1829) subsequently corrected and expanded it several times, this being the final - and least common - edition, published after Mawe's death. Provenance: dedication to "Jane" in an old hand, dated September 23 1839; inscribed by E. G. Wilkins, Leyton, dated September 24th [19]27. A sumptuously bound copy. Nissen ZBI, 4437 [under Wodarch].

Wooden box (22.3 x 18.0 x 4.8 cm) with custom-made compartments under two glass panels; with printed name-bearing labels mounted; and metal hinges and locks. = A fine, carefully constructed sample-box, most probably made for a travelling agent of the famous French Maison Vilmorin-Andrieux, one of the leading cereal breeders and producers in western Europe. The agronomist and plant breeder Charles Philippe Vilmorin, author of Les meilleurs blés. Description et culture des principales variétés de froments d'hiver et de printemps, was its head, and responsible for many illustrated catalogues with new and improved cereals.
