Here is a broadsheet program for an evening's entertainment at Massasoit Hall in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania sponsored by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. The W. C. T. U. was a women-led mass social reform movement that promoted abstinence from alcohol along with evangelical Christianity. In order to get their message out to the men of Strasburg, many of whom were, no doubt, Civil War veterans, and to provide an alternative to their drinking, the W. C. T. U. here sponsors a program of music from the American Civil War or other patriotic songs and tableaux. The war had ended just over twenty years earlier, but the sentimental and stirring songs still resonated. The difficult, often contentious, battle fought by W.E.B. Du Bois to seek racial equality and racial integration across all quarters. Rudwick explains how Du Bois picked no favorites. He needled the growing Negro intelligentsia and demanded from white Americans a solution for the "Negro problem." W.E.B. Du Bois, according to Rudwick, "...made a career of seeking to popularize the unpopular cause of race equality, choosing to live intimately with frustration rather than with smashing success. Trying to find the portal to integration, he battled Republicans, Democrats, Socialists, Communists, and the labor unions, as well as such Negro leaders as Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, and Walter White, who often disputed the practicality of his ideas."

Biography of Wade Hampton III (1818-1902), wealthy planter-one of the largest slaveholders in the Southeast-Confederate officer, and controversial South Carolina governor and two-term U.S. Senator. During Reconstruction, Hampton argued for limited Black (male) suffrage; he later won the governorship of South Carolina by stirring up racial animosity, helped by white paramilitary political clubs. "The Hamburg massacre in July 1876, in which six blacks and one white were killed, was the worst outbreak of violence in a campaign characterized by white attempts to demoralize black voters." (ANB)

Gouache painting ca. 1898 showing Uncle Sam declaring War against Spain, i.e. The Spanish-American War. American war vessels with large gun emplacements, and tall smokestacks and masts are seen in a harbor; one ship at right faces the viewer head-on. Uncle Sam holds a placard with the unambiguous legend "War I Say." A compelling, evocative image. k67

Handy Spanish-American War pocket maps and history of the conflict. The reference work contains much on the politics, diplomacy and background history of the war-part of the larger Cuban War of Independence-and includes statistics and military and naval data. The maps are entitled "Map of Cuba, Its Provinces, Railroads, Cities, Towns, Harbors, Bays, Etc..." (©1897; color) and "Map of Porto Rico and The West Indies."

The construction of the Washington Aqueduct was done under the supervision of Montgomery C. Meigs of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. As seen on these forms, at the time they were furnished, Meigs held the rank of Captain. During the Civil War he would be the Quartermaster General of the Union Army. Was Meigs, an exemplary engineer, the author and designer of these rational bidding forms? An Augusta, Georgia native, Meigs was a career military and civil officer in the District of Columbia. During the period of the use of these forms, dated 1858, Meigs also supervised the expansion of the United States Capitol and the expansion of the General Post Office Building. Minor rubbing to mounts; very good. Two photographs depicting circus-like clown characters and an elaborately decorated wagon and horse each advertising L. C. Prescott's grocery business. One photo shows an Uncle Sam figure in a wild stars and stripes suit and top hat standing alongside a similarly striped and flower decked wagon surmounted by an American flag. On the side of the wagon appear to be mounted dinner plates, arranged neatly in formation.There also seem to be flattened, empty printed and ornamented bags of products, perhaps cloth or paper bags for such staples as sugar and flour one could buy at Prescott's groceries. Even the wheels of the wagons have been "done up" and covered in two-toned fabric. The horse is clad in decorative raiment, perhaps for a street parade. [Habana, Cuba]: [Nueva Fabrica de Hielo, ca. 1930s?]. Color lithographic trade card printed on thick card stock. Approx. 5 x 3 ½  inches. Fine condition. Trade card for the Cuban brewery, Nueva Fabrica de Hielo, makers of Tropical Beer. Their trade card offered an invitation to the company's tropical gardens with a promise of entertainment and "Free Beer!" guaranteeing a "permanent smile and everlasting pep you'll only find in cristal [sic] beer". We imagine this pitch card was geared towards American tourists and servicemen and is likely a rare survival.

[West Chester University, Pennsylvania, 1984.] Broadside. 14 x 8¾ inches. Black ink printed upon bright yellow paper. Various light creases, small thumbtack holes; very good. During February's Black History Month in 1984, the celebrated poet Maya Angelou gave a free talk, open to the public, at West Chester University, Chester County, Pennsylvania. This broadside announces the occasion. It is designed simply, and reproduces a portrait of the author, taken from an original photograph. Two years later, in 1986, Angelou would publish the fifth of her seven autobiographical works, All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes.
