Bookplate on front pastedown. This informal commentary by Stegner is based on recorded discussions engaged in by him before Dartmouth audiences, with Professors Jay L. Parini and A.B. Paulson and with visiting Author Ishmael Reed, during Stegner's period in residence at the College as a Montgomery Fellow in June and July of 1980. Wallace Earle Stegner (1909-1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist, and historian, often called 'The Dean of Western Writers'. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977, and through his writing program at Stanford University, influenced generations of writers (Edward Abbey, Ken Kesey, Wendell Berry, Larry McMurtry).

Wanted poster for three bank robbers from Kansas that features mugshots of each with brief descriptions and aliases. "These men are wanted for bank robbery and also for blowing up the jail at Newton, Kan. this spring. I have been informed that they are either in Utah or on their way here, and all banks should take extra precaution as bank robbing is their profession. These men are desperate and always go well armed. No chance should be taken with them.

San Francisco: Southern Pacific Company, 1924. 15pp. Square quarto [23 cm x 20 cm] Illustrated wrappers. Better than very good. Vertical fold as issued. Illustrated guide for the prospective tourist that offers a stop-by-stop guide from Seattle to San Francisco, that provides information (usually a paragraph) on each stop along the route of the Southern Pacific. 'These are notes by the way. They anticipate questions and indicate features of the route and points of interest as seen from the car window. For the convenience of passengers, side trips are stated, distances given and fares noted wherever junctions occur or where stage lines run to places of resort or to towns off the main line.

Illustrated trade catalogue showing different images, illustrations and printing techniques for use with Wedgewood Enamel paper. "Wedgewood Enamel has an unusually dull surface which gives it an extremely attractive and classy appearance, and at the same time the surface is suitable for halftone printing. Ink especially made for use on dull-finish paper produces the best results, and care should be exercised to use the proper amount of ink as well as sufficient impression, and press should not be speeded up. The so-called duotone or double-tone inks when used on this paper, produce pleasing effects" - p.[1].

[Bozeman, MT]: A. Schlechten, 1909. Silver gelatin photograph [34 cm x 27 cm] / [13.5" x 10.5"]. Nice condition with strong contrasts. Title in the negative. View of a waterfall. Albert Schlechten (1876-1962) initially established a portrait photography studio with his brother but he spent most of his time and efforts on location and landscape photography. Shortly after his move to Montana in 1900, Albert purchased an 11x14 in. field camera and began photographing the mountains, rivers, lakes and farmland around Bozeman. Established in 1900, the Schlechten Brothers, became renowned for Albert's landscape photography.

Based on ten years of research, West from Salt Lake includes excerpts from twenty-three emigrant diaries, many previously unpublished. Using Simpson's diary to trace his route, editor Jesse G. Petersen has located each campsite and shows which of Simpson's two alternative wagon roads the parties traveled. In addition to the annotated emigrant accounts, Petersen excerpts four documents by non-emigrants: two by soldiers and two by employees of the Pony Express and its predecessor.

First Edition. 341pp. Large quarto [35 cm] Gray cloth with the title gilt stamped on the backstrip and an illustration by Catlin of Eagle's Ribs in red on the front board. Near fine. Morgan considered this volume, the fruit of two decades of research, his most important single historical work. It is primarily an edited compilation of primary sources relating to Ashley's Missouri Fur Company and his activities in the beaver trade after selling out to Jedediah Smith, David E. Jackson, and William L. Sublette, and before his death in 1838. Scores of letters, accounts, diaries, and newspaper transcripts are salted liberally with Morgan's able commentary and historical notes. It was to be considered for the Pulitzer Prize but was submitted past the entry deadline. A companion volume on Robert Campbell was planned for 1965 but never published. Saunders 49.

Self-published collection of verse by this Methodist preacher, that was inspired by a trip to the western U.S. Includes poems on the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, the sage of Nevada, Yosemite, Crater Lake and other western locales.

Flagstaff: Northland Press, 1980. First Edition. 64pp. Oblong Quarto [21 cm x 29 cm] Bound in light blue and dark blue cloth with silver stamped titles on the front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. Gentle rubbing to jacket near spine. Bookplate on front pastedown. Photographs by Michael Collier and a foreword by Bruce Babbitt. Powell's love song to the rivers of Arizona, runs chronologically from their "discovery" and settlement by Europeans. He enters the San Pedro Valley in 1540 with the soldiers of the Spanish empire, winds down the Santa Cruz through the heroic age of Spanish missionaries, and finally moves up the Mogollon Rim to the more recent Mormon settlements in northern Arizona. Along the way we are treated to a rich brew of the history, geography, literature, and lore of three cultures: Indian, Spanish and Anglo.

Missoula, MT: Peyton Moncure, 1960. Silver gelatin print [18 cm x 27 cm] / [7" x 10.5"] that has been nicely hand-colored. Photographer stamp on the reverse. Nice condition with good contrasts. Nice tinted view of the Wing Hong Chong Company and the General Blacksmithing buildings in Virginia City, Montana. This image was likely taken for Moncure's lecture on Montana Ghost towns that he gave on occasion. Walker Peyton Moncure (1916 - 1987) was the son of a trader, who grew up among the Cheyenne and Crow Indians and spent much time with the Flathead, Pend d'Oreille, Blackfeet, Assiniboine and Gros Ventre tribes. The Cheyenne named him "Ex-sar-sivia" (sharp-nose white man). He worked at Fort Missoula detailing Forest Service maps based on aerial photography and retired from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture News-Information Education Dept. Peyton Moncure earned a reputation as a writer-photographer, an authority on Montana Indians and ghost towns, and a wildlife conservation advocate.
