Description:
First Edition with publisher's seal to copyright page and dated April, 1916. Beige boards stamped in red and black with 48 black and white illustrations by Boardman Robinson.
A lovely copy, fine indeed, with bright boards, sharp text and straight edges. The only flaw is an ex-libris stamp (no other markings).
This book is Reed's recounting of his experiences traveling in Central Europe in 1915 accompanied by Boardman Robinson, a Canadian artist and frequent Masses contributor. Traveling from Thessalonki, they saw scenes of profound devastation in Serbia (including a bombed-out Belgrade), also going through Bulgaria and Romania. They passed through the Jewish Pale of Settlement in Bessarabia. In Chelm, they were arrested and incarcerated for several weeks. At risk of being shot for espionage, they were saved by the American ambassador.

Inscribed by Toynbee on behalf of he and his wife, Veronica, and separately signed in full by Veronica. Loosely inserted are four Christmas greetings, three signed by Arnold and one by Veronica, and an author's compliments card. All items to the same recipient.
A leading specialist in foreign affairs, Toynbee is best known for his 12-volume A Study of History, ranked as one of the top 100 nonfiction books by the Modern Library. Veronica was a frequent co-editor with her husband.
Very good, some spotting to the rear board, staining to front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers in good dust wrapper, rubbed and creased, foxing to the interior, paperclip shadow to front flap.
Christmas greetings signed by Arnold are fine, greeting by Veronica and author's compliments card are tanned.
Though a prolific author, Toynbee's is an uncommon signature.
