Description:
Cynthiana, Kentucky: The Hobson Book Press, 1945. First Edition. 82 pp. VG+ in an about VG clipped dustjacket (creasing and edgewear, soiling and light chipping).   A scarce book of poems from McGregor, who was formerly Superintendent of two Sioux reservations, Rosebud Reservation and Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota. The dustjacket flap describes McGregor as well qualified “to interpret the real Indian character to the white man.” In his Introduction, McGregor writes, “Cruel and unjust as it is, the Indians must follow the white way of life and share some of the good things and suffer from the bad. They will eventually be absorbed by the white race they have loved and hated, imitated and fought, praised and condemned.” Poems include “Chief Crazy Horse,” “The Sioux Meat Supply,” “Sioux in World War Two,” “Sioux Winter Count,” “White Schools,” “Sitting Bull,” “Mixed Marriages,” and “Indian Mother Speaks.”

Description:
Notebook containing lecture notes and notes from readings belonging to Lt. (J9) Lester Moore, United States Navy. VG+, browning to pages, 2” of covers at tail separated from spiral binding. Moore (1924-2009) graduated for the United States Naval Academy in 1946 before serving seven years as an officer in the Navy Submarine Service. This Sprial Composition Book, Marginal Ruled, presumably from his time at the Academy in the mid 1940s, contains handwritten lecture notes on recto and versos of all but two of the 54 pages. Equations, drawings, and charts throughout. Touches on chemical warfare, poisons, chemical and vomiting agents and their psychological effects, incendiaries, decontamination, effects of radiation on the body and fall out problems. An intriguing peek at the warfare concerns being taught at the Naval Academy during the decade of the second World War.

Description:
[Beverly Hills], 1927. One-page leaflet/broadside, 5” x 9” folded for mailing. With original mailing envelope from “The Fairplay Institute,” Los Angeles. Postmarked Jan. 4, 1927. Addressed to Harry C. Frank, Delaware, Ohio. Apparently issued to accompany the Beverly Hills “float” that won First Prize in the Rose Parade of 1927. Wagner humorously describes “shaded drives and beautiful homes wherein shine all the brightest stars of Movieland,” with “two swimming pools to every bible,” minus the “glue factories, lovely sewers, ridiculous building permits and other ‘advantages’” of the surrounding “Loss Angylees.” Wagner (1872-1942) was a left-leaning former newspaper artist who, upon moving to Los Angeles, began to write about the burgeoning film industry for the Saturday Evening Post. He wrote and directed films in Hollywood, became friends with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Will Rogers, Upton Sinclair, and Charlie Chaplin (he was also his publicist). In 1929, Wagner founded his… Read More

Forbes Co. Boston (Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Co. operated in Boston 1862-1930). 11.5" x 31.5" Litho on thin original paper that is linen backed and whitewashed. Seems to have been a placard (and perhaps the original was also affixed to blue linen). Overall VG. Circa. 1882 (Sparks launched in 1880, and it seems that this is the Grand Opera House in Brooklyn, which opened in 1881).   Edouin was a famous English-born comedian who spent considerable time in the States after 1870. He also performed in a number of minstrel shows, and it seems by the images of this litho that this was part of these performances as well. Unrecorded in OCLC and auction records.

Washington, D.C.: The Armagh Press, 1986. First Edition, First Printing. 48 pp, illustrated, with a handwritten correction to a poem (p. 44) in the author’s own hand. While this is not a signed copy, inserted into the book is a handwritten one-page letter from the author to Maxine Kumin, dated June 1987, which warmly talks about their conversations at the Library of Congress and this, her first book, which she sent to Kumin, saying she would be pleased for her to comment on it. SIGNED in full by Sanders, with a postscript that mentions that the book “is meant to be a contemporary form of a medieval Book of Hours.” Uncommon.
