Description:
Pegasus, New York, 1969. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. black titles spine; "the Civil War had an incalculably. traumatic effect on the. South and the Southern spirit, but it did not bring about the creation of a new South within a few short years. To the contrary, much of the Old South civilization survived the war and reconstruction and lived on into the twentieth century. Professor Eaton's brilliant and sensitive study begins with the formation of the Southern Confederacy and ends with the 1880's when men such as Henry Grady and Atticus Haygood were hailing the rise of the New South, The author explores the currents of social and cultural life that flowed on despite the disaster of a civil conflict - and de-emphasizes the military and political history that has been treated in depth elsewhere. However, he makes it clear that in the 1880's the Old South was by no means dead: it waned slowly and could not truly be called gone until the Depression years of the… Read More

HarperCollins/Fount Paperbacks, London, 1992. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good Condition. For 2000 years, Christian monks have been living the original "green" lifestyle based upon their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Description:
Penguin, London, 1974. First Paperback Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Sufism has a large following in the West, not only as a study for Orientalists, but as a practical path of spiritual development. It is also the source of inspiration for some remarkable literature. In an earlier book, The Sufis, Idries Shah - currently at the head of the Sufi tradition -outlined Sufi concepts against a historical account of their immense influence over the centuries on many diverse cultures. In The Way of the Sufi, he presents an unparalleled cross-section of material from Sufi schools, teachings and classical writings as a basic course of Sufi study." Description:
Nimrod Books Services//Learnex Ltd, Liss, Hampshire, 1985. Second Impression. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. blue end-papers; Gamekeeping is a way of life; a career of dedication to the protection of game and the preservation of the countryside. Unhappily many of the large estate owners who were able to afford a gamekeeper are no longer able to do so and, with the ever-growing threat from the anti-country sports fraternity, there is a danger that one more tradition will fade away. An attempt has been made to make the book as practical as possible so that those interested in gamekeeping as a career can study what is involved at first hand. Throughout photographs or other illustrations have been added, thus bringing the text to life from actual gamekeeping situations. The rearing of pheasants, their management, the problems encountered and many other aspects are explained and discussed. This is a book which shows first-hand the nature of gamekeeping as it is actually… Read More

Times Press Ltd./Longbooks, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1970. First Edition. Softcover. Fair Condition. This Island, known officially to the English as the Isle of Man, has had many differing designations in the course of its long history and the one in official and general use today is surely the most ridiculous of the lot, taken at its apparent meaning in the English language - especially as women predominate over men in its population. There has recently been some controversy over it, and a claim that by adding a second "n" to Man the difficulty might be solved, but public opinion seemed to be that this minor change would involve a lot of trouble which was hardly worth while, so the spelling was left optional. Manx people themselves have a simpler way out of the difficulty; they call it in Manx Gaelic, Ellan Vannin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 99 pages. Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1920's. First Thus. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 'What I saw in America' is a compilation of articles G.K. Chesterton wrote for an English publication during his trip to the United States in the early 1920s. It includes many insights, perhaps the most famous of which are that America is "a nation with the soul of a church" and that Broadway would be "a glorious garden of wonders Â… to any one was lucky enough to be unable to read." 'What I Saw in America' tells us as much about the author and his particular views as it does about his destination. Indeed, Chesterton's personalised observations - his aversion to imperialism, capitalism, Anglo-Americanism and his commitment to democracy and fraternity - are distinguished by the piercing wit for which he is famed. Many of Chesterton's reflections are timeless and startlingly prescient. He was highly critical of both the naive… Read More

Description:
Century, London, 1983. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very Good/N/A. Century Travellers Series; illustrated by b/w. maps & drawings; "As a challenge for explorers the mountain wilderness between India and Inner Asia was unique. The Western Himalayas were seen as a barrier guarding fabled cities unvisited since Marco Polo, barring the way for the commercial opening of Central Asia and Inland China. It took half a century to penetrate this barrier - evidence enough of the appalling difficulties involved. Then, as now, these were partly man-made, for the mountains were of overriding strategic and political importance: there was too much at stake for the sort of free-for-all that happened in Africa or Australia. The freelance traveller was discouraged or discredited; official travellers operated behind a dense screen of secrecy and unlikely excuses. Then there was the terrain - the most formidable on earth, powerful enough to undermine man's sense of self-importance. Yet these… Read More

Description:
Abacus/Sphere, London, 1988. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very Good/N/A. The star of white, moderate, liberal opposition must have exploded light years ago and yet the news is only now filtering through. The sun is shining but it does not fool anyone. This is funeral weather. In 1987 the award-winning novelist Christopher Hope returned to his native South Africa for his first real visit in 12 years. He went to cover the May election, to assess the state of white South Africa, to follow the paths of his childhood, and to try to make sense of the place. Frequently he found only non-sense. He found South Africa so absurd, so mad and so incredible that this book - his first work of non-fiction - reads like a scalding black comedy."; 273 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
