London: Chapman and Hall, 1845. Half Leather. Very Good+ binding. Octavo. iv, 491, [1]; iv, 375, [1]; iv, 372 pp., frontises, plates. First English edition. In early calf with corners with pebbled cloth over boards; all edges marbled. Light shelfwear, but quite a presentable set; each volume with a previous owner bookplate on the front pastedown. Bleiler calls it "Sensationalism, anti-Jesuitism, and primitive socialism all in one long, complex sprawling novel." Here offered with 102 of the 104 plates called for by Sadleir. It is fairly difficult to find issues with any plates, much less a near complete copy in such nice condition. Sadleir 3159; Bleiler 1565.

Description:
1796. 4" x 1.75". One signed by Daniel Carroll of Duddington and one by Notley Young. Ticket #6696 signed by Young "will entitle the possessor to such Prize as may be drawn to its Number, in Lottery No. 1, for cutting the CANAL through the City of Washington to the Eastern-Branch Harbour." The second ticket (#3032) is for a "Quarter Part of such Prize...." Daniel Carroll of Duddington and his uncle Notley Young were significant landowners in the District and this canal was surely an attempt bring value to their land. While the fundraising via lottery around 1796 was largely ineffectual. It wasn't until a decade later when Congress funded the work that the canal was started in earnest. It was finished in 1815 and as these things go, largely out of use by the mid-19th century. In 1871 it was filled in. These two lottery tickets are a glimpse into the nascency of Washington D.C. Light toning and with a scalloped left edge, these are wonderful examples of two different signers and two different versions.

New York: Neale Publishing Company, 1916. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. 410 pp., frontis, maps, plates. First edition. As issued, in orange cloth; all plates are present as called for. Spine is darkened; a significant snag and resulting closed tears to the cloth has been suitably mended; covers are a trifle soiled; contents are largely clean; hinges starting, but holding. Gift inscription from a Greenbrier manager to Granville Valentine; and later an inscription by Valentine gifting this book to "Wilton"; Wilton's bookplate on the front pastedown. Valentine was a member of a prominent Virginia family. Krick calls this a "well written" book and notes that the author "deals primarily with the history of the place from the 18th Century to its resurgence after the Civil War. A chapter on the Battle of Dry Creek, August 27-28, 1864, will interest students of the war, as will a description of the successful effort to thwart David Hunter's eager torch" Neale Books 297.
