Wailuku, Maui: Hawaii: David Sandell, 1988 & 1989. Spiral bound. Two black and white spiral-bound calendars by Maui artist David Sandell. Each measures 48 x 28 cm, with illustrated covers, each month illustrated by Sandell's distinctive work. Both with moderate edgewear, 1988 with staining throughout. Months and days of the week are given in both Hawaiian and English; holidays and local personalities' birthdays are noted. A native of southern California, Sandell got his start drawing what he called "atrocious cartoons" for the Lahaina Sun in the early 1970s, eventually branching into more structured drawing, painting and t-shirt production. Maui Magazine describes Sandell's work during this period as "vivid reminders of a time when island life as free and loose and unpredictable as hippies on mushrooms. ... As Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was to Partisian cafe society in the 1880s, so David Sandell was to Maui a century later - the intrepid chronicler of a beau monde fueled by passionate creativity,… Read More
