London: Copyright P.A. Reuter, Published by The Daily Telegraph, 10 June 1946. Photograph. This original press photograph captures iconic leaders Attlee, Churchill, King, and Smuts at the London Victory Day Celebration on 8 June 1946. The unusually large gelatin silver print on matte photo paper measures 9.5 x 12 inches (24.1 in x 30.5 cm). Condition approaches very good. The paper is clean and bright with pin holes to the four corners and minor wear and curling to extremities. The verso features two ink stamps and three original captions, once printed, two typed. A copyright stamp attributes the image to P.A. Reuter while a PUBLISHED stamp of The Daily Telegraph ART DEPARTMENT is dated 10 JUN 1946. A newspaper caption from original publication (uncharitably overlooking Smuts) reads Mr Attlee, Mr. Churchill and Mr. Mackenzie King watching the Victory Parade from the saluting base in the Mall. A typed caption on blue paper titled VICTORY DAY, and dated June 8th 1946,…

Description:
Johannesburg: Cape to Cairo Publications, 1931. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is an anthology of short stories from South African writers with a Foreword by Lord de Villiers. Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is tight, clean, and square, retaining bright spine gilt, sharp corners, and nicely rounded spine. The contents are tight and bright, though spotted on all three text block edges, with intermittent intrusions into the text edges and more spotting at the prelims. There is a gift inscription on the ffep and a small South African bookshop sticker at the front pastedown. The striking and beautiful bright yellow dust jacket, illustrated in red and black, is highly complete and unfaded. There is soiling to the blank rear face, wrinkling at the spine ends, wear at the corners, and a small, circular bookshop sticker over the publisher's name at the bottom of the spine (from the same bookshop on the pastedown sticker).

Description:
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1946. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed copy of the U.S. first edition, only printing of the sixth of Churchill's seven war speech volumes. Victory contains speeches from January to August 1945. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labor in the General Election of July 1945. His final speech in this volume - a review of the war delivered on 16 August 1945 to the House of Commons - is delivered as Leader of the Opposition rather than as Prime Minister. Condition is good plus in a good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square, clean, bright, and tight, though with bumps to the corners and wrinkling to the spine ends. The contents are clean, though age-toned. We find no previous ownership marks. A few tiny instances of spotting appear confined to the upper fore edges. The dust jacket retains the original $3.50 front flap price and the red spine…

Description:
London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1946. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, only printing, first state of the sixth volume of Churchill's war speeches. Both aptly and ironically titled Victory, this volume contains speeches, broadcasts, messages, statements, a letter, and the text of the Crimea Declaration made, sent, and issued between 18 January and 16 August 1945. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. His final speech in this volume - a review of the war delivered on 16 August 1945 to the House of Commons - was delivered as Leader of the Opposition rather than as Prime Minister. In this speech Churchill trenchantly observed ...The bomb brought peace, but men alone can keep that peace, and henceforward they will keep it under penalties which threaten the survival, not only of civilization but of humanity itself

Description:
Paris: Etienne Ganeau, 1725. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Having joined the East India Company as a chaplain, Ovington was assigned to the Company's vessel Benjamin for a voyage to the East Indies in 1689. Ovington stopped briefly in Bombay and then settled at Surat for two and a half years. His narrative describes Bombay as a sink of debauchery filled with whores and drunkards. Of Surat Ovington commented at length of the Mughal influence, on religious and cultural characteristics of the Hindus and Parsees, and the nature of the fakeer or Mohammedan religious mendicant. In passing Ovington described and defended the drinking of tea for which he was later attacked by Alexander Hamilton. Of the greatest interest, however, is Ovington's outline of the organization and operation of the English factory at Surat. Of the early narratives, Ovington's possesses greater interest and far wittier prose". (Riddick) These two volumes, respectively 323 pp and 318 pp, comprise the first French translation from the…
