It is in its original (rather delicate and discoloured) glassine cover, with a letter from the author to John Fowles, her dedication to John Fowles on the book's half title, and a card with the signed autograph of Edward Gorey, who did the cover illustration. One of only 300 copies, signed and inscribed by author: 'For John Fowles, with admiration, Alison Lurie' on the half title page. The letter to Fowles is loosely enclosed, and is signed 'Alison Bishop'. Alison Lurie was married at the time to Jonathan Peale Bishop. GRANT USA, 1971 A gorgeous collection of this fine artist's work, made invaluable by the inclusion of a Checklist of his work. The extensive essay by Moskowitz is a fine example of this science fiction expert's wide knowledge. It is, of course, for the extraordinary artwork within the pages that the fan will appreciate most; this does not disappoint. Beautifully reproduced on fine art paper, the work shimmers with skill and vision. Clean and tight book, unmarked, and inside a beautiful fresh cloth binding. The white jacket is a bit grubby but there are no tears or chips. It has done its job, and that must be graded Very Good because it is a bit foxed (all the copies I have seen are foxed) but there is very little damage. A tiny tear on the back, but nothing too rough. The jacket is now protected in mylar. A fine tribute to a great craftsman from the mid Twentieth Century. Erotic? Yes, but not pornographic.
