Signed promotional still of the dashing Italian actor from the 1962 French film, distributed in the U.S. by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.  Inscribed to Paul McMahon.  Oblong format, 8 x 10 inches (20.2 x 25.5 cm).  In fine condition. A Very Private Affair (La vie privée in the original French) was a star vehicle for Brigitte Bardot, whose character, named Jill, was her alter ego to a considerable extent.  Mastroianni functioned as her male co-star.  Reviews were more favorable in Europe than in the U.S.From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon's stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy's Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Vintage J. Abresch of NY 8 x 10 inch publicity photograph, stamped 1945 to verso and with an affixed clipping promoting an upcoming NY Town Hall appearance. With some toning to upper edge and small areas of in-painting from publication, else fine. The American violinist was possibly the most recorded musical artist of the 20th century. He played the soundtrack on as many as 500 movies and over 100 musical recordings. He is also credited with reviving the music of Antonio Vivaldi with his recording of The Four Seasons in 1947, which won the Grand Prix du Disque in 1950, was elected to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, and in 2003 was selected for the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Vintage photograph of the great dancer printed on matte photo paper stock, apparently a photograph of a laid down trimmed program photograph. Probably printed ca. 1940s but undated. Corners perished, edges chipped and torn, image itself in good shape. 8 x 10 inches (21 x 27 cm).Nijinsky is shown as he appeared in the historic first production of Fokine's Les Sylphides by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, premiered 2 June 1909 at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, together with Tamara Karsavina, Anna Pavlova, and Alexandra Baldina. The ballet, described as a "romantic reverie", is frequently cited as the first ballet to be simply about mood and dance.  Les Sylphides has no plot but instead consists of several white-clad sylphs dancing in the moonlight with the "poet" or "young man" dressed in white tights and a black tunic.

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Vintage 1950 packaging for a set of his-and-hers "Guys and Dolls" sport shirts, a souvenir from the immortal Frank Loesser Broadway show. Beaver Shirt Manufacturers Co., New York. The inside of the box reads: "For the Guy and his Doll... Here's something... Companion sportshirts designed for two." Some soiling and a small water stain; box intact with no rips or tears. 15 1/2" X 9 1/2" X 4".

One crease at the corner and slightly smudged; overall in very good condition. 4 x 2.5 inches (10 x 6 cm).Matisse painted many views of Notre-Dame from his studio at 19 Quai Saint-Michel. Ragnar Hoppe reported Matisse saying in 1919 that "this little apartment here is inconvenient, but I've lived here for many years, I've grown attached to it, and I can't be without the view." (Jack Flam: Matisse on Art (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1995), p. 74.)

Rare early flyer promoting performances by the young conductor with the New York City Symphony at New York City Center for the 1945-46 season.  The flyer reads "New York City Symphony / conducted by Leonard Bernstein / Vital Music old and new Superbly performed under a Stimulating Young Conductor / At prices within the reach of all," all above a portrait of an almost impossibly young Bernstein.  The concerts, which took place between October 8, 1945 and April 1, 1946, included "12 Monday Symphonies," "Symphonies at 6," and "Symphonies for Young America (Ages 12 to 24)," and promised "The finest in modern music," "refreshing vigorous programs," and "new youthful spirit in music."  Stamped "Sep 27 1945" to verso.  Horizontal folding crease with one-inch tear along crease, overall in fine condition."Leonard Bernstein was part performer (his earliest aspirations were as a pianist), part composer, part conductor, part lecturer and author, and part teacher.  An 11-time… Read More

Original etching by English painter and engraver Thomas Holloway, ca. 1791, who created these thirty-three head portraits of the French philosopher after illustrations by Swiss painter Jean Huber for Johann Caspar Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy, Designed to Promote the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind, London, Bensley, 1789-98.  Toning and scattered foxing, irregularly trimmed, overall in fine condition.  7.5 x 9.25 inches (19 x 23.5 cm.).In 1772, in a note to French patron of the arts Madame du Deffand, Voltaire writes: "Since you have seen Monsieur Huber, he will do your portrait; he will do it in pastel, in oils, or in mezzotint.  With scissors he will make a cutout sketch of you as a complete caricature.  This is the way he ridiculed me from one end of Europe to the other."  Huber popularised the art of the silhouette, and worked without even making an initial sketch.  His talent for cutouts allowed him to create the most complicated scenes of fights and… Read More
