Full morocco, gilt-ruled, in antique style. Marginal repairs to title and one or two other leaves, not affecting text, but very good. Errata corrected in an early hand. First Edition, second state, with the title dated 1764. "The title-page is also found in an earlier state, with line 7 set in English instead of Great Primer and ending with a full point instead of a colon, and with the last line reading: M DCC LXII. Both states are printed from the same setting of type (with these exceptions), and neither is found as a cancel" (Gaskell). Isaacs and Lindemann discovered interferon in 1956 while investigating the influenza virus: they found that chick embryos injected with the virus produce minute amounts of a protein that destroys the invading virus and increases resistance to other viral infections. Interferon was at first hailed as a major breakthrough in the treatment of viral infections, but the difficulty and expense of its production at the time discouraged further research until the late 1960s, when interferon's value as a weapon against cancer and certain viral diseases was discovered, and ways were found to manufacture it more economically. Alexis Carrel was a French surgeon and biologist who was awarded the 1912 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "in recognition of his work on vascular structure and the transplantation of blood vessels and organs." Flammarion's signed autograph draft of what appears to be a popular article based on a section of his classic La Planète Mars et ses Conditions d'Habitabilité, published in 1892. Some of the text in our manuscript, particularly that on ff. 8 and 9, appears in the first volume of La Planète Mars, in the chapter titled "Changements actuellement observes" (pp. 547-578); however, the remainder of the manuscript's text varies widely from the printed book's, and appears to be geared toward a more general audience.
