The Vermont Brigade, a part of the Sixth Corps served under the command of Major General Phillip H. Sheridan, commander of the Army of the Shenandoah. The author was a battalion commander in the Eleventh Vermont, a regiment of the hard fighting Brigade. At just one engagement, the Battle of the Wilderness, Vermont experienced its worst day of the war; 1,000 men were killed or wounded from the 1st Vermont Brigade alone.
