[Salt Lake City], 1890. Trade card [8 cm x 11.5 cm] printed on both sides. Near fine. Trade card for Salt Lake City's Valley House, which was located at the corner of South Temple and West Temple (the present-day site of Abravanel Hall). The building was originally constructed by Wilford Woodruff upon his arrival to the valley in 1847. It was converted into the Valley House Hotel in the 1870s before being demolished in 1915 to erect the Bamberger Bus Depot. The reverse prints 'Information for Tourists' which contains a brief description of the Temple Block, the Salt Lake Theatre, ZCMI, Fort Douglas, and other points of interest.

Bookplate on the front pastedown. Bert Loper was born in 1869 the very day that Major John Wesley Powell discovered the confluence of the San Juan and Colorado Rivers. Loper spent much of his life devoted to those two streams. But it was never easy. Image of hoodoos in Bryce from below. This RPPC was produced to promote trips from the Utah Parks Company, which was a subsidiary of U.P., that ran guided loop tours of the parks and monuments of southern Utah and northern Arizona.

Salt Lake City, UT, 1894. Boudoir cabinet card. Albumen photograph [12.5 cm x 20.5 cm] on a gray mount [13 cm x 21 cm] Title in the negative. Manuscript date on the back 'Aug, 1894'. Nice image of the Officers Circle at Fort Douglas. The buildings in this image are no part of the University of Utah's campus, and the porch that this photograph was taken, is now known as the 'Honors Upper Division Social Justice House.' Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909) was an accomplished and prolific photographer who lived successfully within his Salt Lake City community and traveled widely throughout the West taking photographs and befriending other important photographers of his day such as Carleton Watkins, Edward Wilson, Timothy O'Sullivan, Alfred Hart and A.J. Russell. Savage took several of the West's most famous images at the celebration of the joining of the transcontinental railroads at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. Savage also took the first photographs of what became Zion National Park.

View of Taylor Creek with Taylor Peaks in the background. Albert Schlechten (1876-1962) initially established a portrait photography studio with his brother but he spent most of his time and efforts on location and landscape photography. Shortly after his move to Montana in 1900, Albert purchased an 11x14 in. field camera and began photographing the mountains, rivers, lakes and farmland around Bozeman. Established in 1900, the Schlechten Brothers, became renowned for Albert's landscape photography.

Gentle sporadic foxing throughout. Better than very good. According to Grunder: "Except for the Bible, 'View of the Hebrews' is the most famous of all Mormon parallel works, partly because it was noticed before most other examples became known. Ethan Smith's book popularized Hebrew Indian-origin theories, then dramatized a need to carry the gospel of Native Americans whom Smith saw as part of the posterity of Israel." "It may never be proved that Joseph [Smith] saw 'View of the Hebrews' before writing the Book of Mormon, but the striking parallelisms between the two books hardly leave a case for mere coincidence." - Fawn Brodie. This collection of material was archived by Flora [McKay] McNulty, with the vast majority of it concerning her in particular, either as correspondence or records kept by. McNulty acted in a variety of positions and capacities in both the Ladies of the Maccabees of the World and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, it appears to be primarily she was the recorder for both. Both of the groups appear to have been very active in the Montana mining town of Virginia City, Montana. The Ladies of the Maccabees of the World were the female auxiliary for the Knights of the Maccabees, a fraternal organization that primarily offered low-cost insurance to members. The Degree of Honor were the female auxiliary for the Ancient Order of United Workmen, which was a fraternal benefits society that was formed shortly after the American Civil War. Missoula, MT: Peyton Moncure, 1960. Silver gelatin print [17.5 cm x 27 cm] / [7" x 10.5"] that has been nicely hand-colored. Photographer stamp on the reverse. Nice condition with good contrasts. Nice tinted view of Wallace Street in Virginia City, Montana, with the facades of Bale of Hay Saloon (still operating) and Old Stone Playhouse, now the Opera House (home of the Virginia City Players) are shown. This image was likely taken for Moncure's lecture on Montana Ghost towns that he gave on occasion. Walker Peyton Moncure (1916 - 1987) was the son of a trader, who grew up among the Cheyenne and Crow Indians and spent much time with the Flathead, Pend d'Oreille, Blackfeet, Assiniboine and Gros Ventre tribes. The Cheyenne named him "Ex-sar-sivia" (sharp-nose white man). Bookplate on front pastedown and name blind stamped on the front free endsheet. Otherwise very good. Chandless crossed the plains as a wagon driver in the summer of 1855, departing from Atchison in July and arriving in Salt Lake City on the first of November. The long description of Utah and the Mormons is based on his stay of two months, before departing for California through southern Utah and Nevada: "Los Vegos [sic] stands in the middle of a valley some thirty-five miles wide, and of considerable length, its lower end opening on the Colorado." - p.293 The fold-out 'Map shewing [sic] the Author's Route' is present at the front of the volume. which Carl Wheat noted was "One of the few 'Mormon Maps' disclosing the route southwest of Salt Lake City past Nephi, Fillmore and Cedar City and thence by desert, to southern California." A listing of all the stops with eastbound and westbound departure times with mileage in each direction. Brief descriptions accompany the stop listings. Illustrated with a small route map. "Welcome Aboard! This short work by Snow was composed while he was a missionary in France, and offers a brief history of the Church up to that time, with a summary of the basic tenets of the faith. Descriptions of the settlement and growth of Nauvoo, the martyrdom of the Smith brothers, the founding of Salt Lake City and the settlement of the surrounding area, an excerpt of a Parley Pratt letter describing life in the Salt Lake Valley. Work closes with a description of the missionary work being done around the world and some of the publications produced. "After twenty-six months in Europe, Lorenzo Snow sailed for the United States on June 12, 1852, but his influence in the foreign missions lived on through his widely circulated pamphlets." - Peter Crawley. Robert Crumb (American b. 1943) is an American cartoonist and musician, who is well-known for influential works and contributions to the underground comix movement in the 1960s. Crumb is known for his quirky artwork coupled with idiosyncratic dialogue.
