Sewn, entirely uncut (à la barbe), loose contemporary grey wrappers (spine strip gone); preserved in modern blue blind wrappers and a wooden drop box. ¶ The very rare first edition of a series of letters by a French naval officer who was kept slave in North Africa and bought free by the canons of the Trinitarian ordre. In it the author gives i.a. a description of Meknès, Salè, Alger, Tunis and Tripoli. The work concludes with a list of 313 French slaves bought free by the Trinitarian ordre in 1785, who later that year (9th of July) arrived in the harbour of Marseille. Fine copy in pure state as issued (was never bound). With on the title and p. iii the library stamp of the "Pères Trinitaires de Marseille". A German translation was published in 1788. Playfair, Algeria 280; Tailliart 1618; ABES (the French Union Catalogus) lists only 2 copies.

Richly illustrated with over 250 gravures and examples in black and in colour. ¶ Last and most complete edition of the fine typographical manual, with numerous examples of Victorian and Art Nouveau typography. The Cambridge University Library posses a presentation copy from the author to E.Bartlett (dated 7 july 1924) in which the following note is tipped in: "L'impression de ce volume a ete achevee au debut de 1915 ... ne voulant pas faire censurer mon oeuvre par les bandits ... j'en ai retarde la publication jusqu'apres leur depart. Je prie en consequence le lecture de remplacer le millesime 1915 ... par celui 1918". --(Some scattered light soiling, especially in the outer margin, but a good copy).

With 10 figures and 32 plates. ¶ Valuable exhibition catalogue with ample historical and bibliographical information about 146 famous bird books (Mss. & printed, from the 10th. to the 20th. century).

With 1 engraved title and one engraving in the text. ¶ Very rare, only two copies (1 incomplete) in Dutch libraries, none in the WorldCat. A revised and enlarged edition of "Een uitvoerig en omstandig bericht van de nieuw ontdekte distilleer-konst door J.K.B., Amsterdam, P. Aldewereld, 1736" (with the same engraved title as the 1763 edition).-- (Mediocre copy: The engraved title frayed and mounted; the outer margins of several leaves restored and/or reinforced; edges stained). Bake of d'Outrepont's thesis: "Perpetua Materiae Organico - Animalis Vicissitudo", Halle, 1798, which was also published in J.C. REIL, "Archiv für die Physiologie IV, B. 3e Heft, Ss. 460". D'Outrepont was an outstanding German obstetrician, who succeeded Adam Elias von Siebold as professor of obstetrics at the University of Würzburg. -- (Separated from: Verhandelingen en Waarneemingen t.b.d. A valuable supplement to author's "Illustrated Catalogue of the Historical Microscopes" (1966). Text in Dutch, French, German and English.--(Front & end-paper browned).

With 23 plates. ¶ A collection of recipes offered by Marie Thumas, the legendary Belgium manufacturers of canned food. The cover illustrations and plates are in attractive sepia helio-engravings by J. Verschueren of Antwerpen. A very nice copy.

With 4 coloured plates and numerous illustrations. Due to the technical developments in the early 20th century, quackery was no longer limited to drugs or 'medicines'. The Golden Adge of device quackery started fluorising. Detailed description of the Violetta high frequency current apparatus and its application. During the Interbellum, the high frequency generator was widely used in the U.S. and Europe for self cure and therapy. Even nowadays you can easily find such instruments on fly-markets, but not the manuals for them. According to their manufacturers, Violet rays cures almost everything.
