Major Sylvain-Eugene Raynal and his men held out at Fort Vaux during the long battle for Verdun until June 1916. They were captured after their water ran out and were imprisoned in German POW camps until the Armistice in November 1918. An interesting inscription by, presumably, a 95-year old Verdun veteran.

His inscription in this book came less than four months before his death.
