117 pages with diagrams and tables. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5821) First edition.he inaugural Hungarian Chess Championship was held in the city of Győr in 1906. Initially, there was no governing body responsible for its organization, until the formation of the Hungarian Chess Federation. The HCF first appeared in 1911, but failed to establish itself properly until 1923. The regularity of the Championship was patchy prior to 1950, due in part to the two world wars and inadequate funding. Since 1949 however, the HCF has been integrated with the Hungarian Sports Federation and so receives state support. Consequently, the Championship has since been held on an annual basis, with only the occasional omission. Exceptionally two consecutive events have occurred in the same year, due to the event being held at the year end. The VII championship, held in 1951, attracted twenty-one contestants. Gedeon Barcza was the clear winner with… Read More

But this is only one side of the man. Don Jose was also vitally interested in both the proximate realities and remote possibilities of Mexico, in the character of the "cosmic race" of his homeland, and the relations between his own country and others of this hemisphere. 1 sheet folio (17" x 11 1/4"), engraving (12" x 8 1/2") Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659) was a Spanish politician, administrator, and Catholic clergyman in 17th century Spain and a viceregal of Mexico. Palafox was the Bishop of Puebla (1640−1655), and the interim Archbishop of Mexico (1640−1642). He also held political office, from 10 June 1642 to 23 November 1642 as the Viceroy of New Spain. He lost a high-profile struggle with the Jesuits in New Spain, resulting in a recall to Spain, to the minor Diocese of Osma in Old Castile. He was embroiled in a major controversy with the Jesuits over ecclesiastical jurisdiction that eventually cost him his post as Bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles. The Spanish crown was moving to displace mendicant orders from their populous and lucrative doctrinas in central Mexico, and replace them with parishes staffed by secular (diocesan) clergy with benefices rather than mendicants. He was largely successful in doing so in Puebla.

Very little is known about Albenino (b. 1514?), other than that he was an Italian exile from Florence, where he had been associated with the Medici family. In June of 1548 he wrote a private letter about the most recent developments during the Perúvian civil war–the arrival in Perú of Viceroy Nuñez Vela to pacify the country and his defeat and death at the hands of the rebel Gonzalo Pizarro, Francisco's brother; the war between Pizarro and captain Diego Centeno; and finally, the successful campaign by the new governor, Pedro de la Gasca, who put an end to Gonzalo Pizarro's rebellion. The letter was privately addressed to Fernán Xuárez, a churchman living in Seville, who upon realizing the importance of the news it contained, gave it immediately to… Read More
