12mo, period full calf, red morocco spine label, [2], xxii, 240 pp. Extremities worn, joints and hinges cracking, but still reasonably firm, foxing throughout, and a little soiling, small hole in front endpaper; still a good copy.
An American Imprint with a secular title, that provides a wide range of craft information. Topics range from engraving to wine making. While the commentary is often short and sweet, discussion does give you a real feel how to do it. On the chapter on wine making, it gives enough information for actually making different types of wines. There is even a chapter on spot and stain removal, and another on cooking. Evans 29243. Description:
Square 4to (9" x 12"), illustrated, 243-254 (some pages unnumbered) pp. Some soiling, foxing and browning, a few splits and tears at folds, some chips, tears and folds at extremities, no loss, paper slightly brittle; otherwise about very good. This is a somewhat scarce issue of the first American version of the Vanity Fair magazine, which would run from 1859 to 1863. The American version would precede the British version, which started in 1868. This issue includes several political type cartoons and related text. Also included, is a full page cartoon of a somewhat young Abe Lincoln (without beard) just after he was elected president, holding a horse with a blanket on it that reads 'fugitive slave law.' The caption has Lincoln saying "I say Yancy-if you'll let me have the stables in peace for the next four years, I'll give you some of the best stalls and see that your nag is well taken care of."

Description:
8vo, unusual modern binding of scaled leather spine and tips, and vinyl type cloth, 120 pp. Binding is worn and chipped along spine, a couple of pieces are missing at spine edges, top hinge weak, some foxing and soling to contents, pencil notation on page opposite title, and author's name penciled on title page. Aaron Burr (1756-1836) was a colorful character in American history, who fought in the Revolutionary War, would become Vice President, and would kill Alexander Hamilton in a duel in July 1804. James Cheetham may not have always had a problem with Burr, but in a "Pamphlet War" he would challenge the political behavior of Burr. This pamphlet appears to be a follow-up to another article by Cheetham that called for an investigation of Bur, but produced no results. Cheetham appears to believe that Burr "schemed with the Federalists in 1801 to steal the presidency from Jefferson." According to the DAB fearing the damage this pamphlet could do to him and the party, Burr wanted to suppress it by… Read More

Description:
8vo, contemporary calf spine and tips, rebacked with original spine label laid down, new endpapers, includes half title, 407 pp. Signature on front endpaper and title, ink and pencil numbers on back of title, extremity wear to binding, corner mended, dampstaining to the bottom third of book, some soiling, foxing and aging; otherwise in very good condition overall. Before James Monroe (1758-1831) became president of the United States, his political apprenticeship included serving as Minister to France. He was appointed by George Washington in 1794 to this post, which proved disastrous from a political standpoint. He was recalled in 1796, and while he was an enthusiastic supporter of the French Revolution, he was openly critical of the Jay Treaty with Britain, which antagonized Washington's pro-British cabinet. This work was Monroe's attempt to justify his position. New Book of Knowledge. Evans 32491. Sabin 50020. Howes M727.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, plain paper wrappers, uncut, 72, [6], 4 tables. Wrappers are chipped at the edges, top wrapper has a three inch tear near spine, and somewhat brittle, partially uncut, some minor soiling and aging; still a very good copy. This is a second edition, a first was published in New York in 1800. Gallatin started out in the state legislature in Pennsylvania, but was elected to the House of Representatives in 1794. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1801 under Jefferson. While much of the text is directed at reporting on various Federal financial matters, he does give his views on financial responsibility. So things don't seem to change, and in 1790 the amount of U.S. debt outstanding was less than $70 million.

Description:
8vo, later half calf and early boards, gilt title on spine, 304 pp. Some wear, soiling and staining to binding, edgewear, bookseller's label on front pastedown, normal toning and aging, top hinge a little week, but a tight copy; very good overall. Henry Marie Brackenridge (1786-1871) was an author, traveler, lawyer and judge that was born in Pittsburg. He was sent to get and education in Louisiana, and returned there in 1811 as district attorney for the territory of Orleans. The first part of the book is a descriptive commentary of the territories included in the Louisiana Purchase. However, according to the Streeter Catalogue the real value is in "The Journal;" which gives his account while accompanying fur trader Manuel Lisa on an expedition in 1811 up the Missouri River. Streeter indicates that in 1816 "The Journal" was reprinted separately and expanded and enlarged by the author. Virginia college website. Streeter III. 1776. Howes B668. Sabin 7177.

Description:
Autograph Letter Signed. 2pp. To Davis, Deupree Co., Richmond, Virginia. Some light creasing in the middle of the document, stain near signature, normal aging; overall very good. Kind of scarce slave dealer letter, with a chilling business-as-usual tone, offering to be the slave auctioneers' scout and agent, Taylor had just received a letter from the Richmond firm, "revoking all letters of credit heretofore given me to draw on your firm for the purchase of negroes". Robert H. Davis and William S. Deupree opened their "Negro Bazaar" auction rooms in Richmond's Odd Fellows Hall in 1859 and briefly thrived until bankrupted early in the Civil War. Deupree then became an officer of the Confederate Torpedo Bureau and died in 1864 in a land-mine explosion. The short-lived firm is remembered by philatelic collectors because their advertising envelopes are among the few to survive with the motto, "[We] Sell Slaves".He objected that he had already "made arrangements to move to Lewisburg [200 miles each of… Read More
