United States Pacific Railroad Surveys, 1853. Original. Flat. FINE.. Extracted from the exploration of the 35th Parallel. Full sheet 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Lithograph by A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore. Beige and blue tint. See Robert Taft - Artists and Illustrators of the Old West p.21. n 1853, Heinrich Balduin Mollhausen was named an artist for the government surveys to establish a railway route to the Pacific. He was specifically assigned to the 35th parallel expedition (under the command of Lt. Whipple) which left Arkansas in 1853 and traversed Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and California's Mojave Desert. The Company arrived in the west coast of California (Los Angeles) on March 21, 1854. This original lithograph, of the "Valley of La Cuesta, Rio Pecos" designed by H. B. Mollhausen, was created on this expedition.
