Description:
London: Punch, 1913. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "UNDER HIS MASTER'S EYE." appeared thus on p.395 of the 21 May 1913 issue of Punch. The artist is Leonard Raven-Hill. The image is captioned "Scene - Mediterranean, on board the Admiralty yacht 'Enchantress.' Mr. Winston Churchill. 'Any Home News?' Mr. Asquith. 'How can there be with you here?'" First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill and Prime Minister Herbert Asquith were on board the Enchantress to tour naval facilities in the Mediterranean. Notice a copy of Churchill's book My African Journey (published in 1908, here mistitled as "My Journey in Africa") on the Union Jack pillow beside him. Also of note, "This…

Description:
New York and London: Hodder and Stoughton (for George H. Doran Company), 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing, first state. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, scarce in the first state, and extravagantly scarce thus, inscribed and signed by the author in three lines. Churchill wrote "Uganda is defended by its insects." Directly below he wrote the citation to where this quote is found in the text: "p.94". Below, Churchill signed "Winston S. Churchill". Condition Condition of this compellingly inscribed copy approaches very good. First state is confirmed by Hodder and Stoughton as the only publisher on the title page. The American binding was comparatively plain and aesthetically uninspired compared to that of the British first edition. The cloth proved highly susceptible to fading and mottling of the color; nearly all remaining copies show spine sunning. The binding is square and tight, though spine toned with light scuffing and color variation to the boards. A clean split to the…

Washington, DC: Work Projects Administration (WPA), circa 1942. Poster. This vividly hued original Second World War poster features U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill. It was produced by FDRs Works Projects Administration. Originally measuring 16 x 20.5 inches (40.6 x 52.1 cm) and printed on heavy ivory stock, the poster features portraits of Roosevelt and Churchill linked in twin gold ovals. Extending up from the ovals at an angle forming a steep V are U.S. and British flags. In the V between them is a rendering of the Statue of Liberty backed by a LIBERTY | FOR ALL design, and above that the title banner United for Victory. Below the twin portraits is further decoration and two banners declaring Democracy Shall Not Die and God Gave Us Courage | America Gave Us Strength. Description:
London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1941. Macmillan issue, only printing. Hardcover. This collectible Second World War reprint is the scarce Macmillan issue of the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War, an excellent copy in the quite scarce dust jacket. This copy is near fine in a very good plus dust jacket. The navy blue cloth binding remains tight and clean, with vivid spine gilt, beautifully rounded spine, and sharp corners. We note only a hint of blistering to the cloth along the joints and a little wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are beautifully bright and crisp. This book feels unread. Differential toning to the endpapers consistent with the dust jacket flaps confirms what the binding already testifies that this copy has spent life jacketed. The sole previous ownership mark we find is a name and wartime date of August 14, 1942 in faded ink on the front pastedown. Spotting appears confined to the page edges. The dust jacket faces remain bright and…

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1937. Hardcover. This is the scarce Keystone Library issue of the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War in the original dust jacket. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the War to end all wars. Then, being Churchill, he wrote about it. In originally proposing this sixth and final book to his U.S. publisher, Charles Scribner, Churchill wrote: "In the previous volumes of the World Crisis I have described only in a few pages the course of events in the Eastern theatre. They have merely been the background of our main drama of the war. But now I think I might write a volume called 'The Eastern Front', which would be separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." The British first edition, first printing, is the scarcest volume of the six. Respectable copies are in particularly short…

London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1941. Hardcover. This collectible Second World War reprint is the scarce Macmillan issue of the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War. This copy is in good plus condition. The smooth blue cloth binding remains bright with no dulling of the color and bright gilt. We note some small stains to the front cover, modest wear to extremities, and a little wrinkling of the binding cloth at the left hinge. The contents show only mild, intermittent spotting within and on the text block edges. All illustrations and maps are present and the folding maps at p. 98, 142, 156, 250, 256, 308, 324, 338, 346, and 368 are all properly folded with no tears. A single previous owner name and date is inked on the front free endpaper. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the War to end all wars. London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1942. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, first printing, first state of the second volume of Churchill's war speeches, containing 72 of Churchill's speeches, broadcasts, and messages to Parliament from November 1940 to the end of 1941, terminating with Churchills famous speeches to the U.S. Congress and the Canadian Parliament. Churchill's words during this time resounded during some of the darkest and most uncertain days of the war. This first edition, first printing is in very good condition in a good dust jacket. First state is confirmed by irregular spacing of the pagination at p.281. The blue cloth binding is square, tight, and unfaded, with bright spine gilt. Trivial shelf wear is confined to extremities. The contents show no previous ownership marks and spotting is substantially confined to the first and final leaves and page edges. The first printing dust jacket is unclipped, the original lower front flap price…

Description:
Toronto: McClelland and Stewart Limited, 1942. Canadian first edition. Hardcover. This is a quite presentable copy of the Canadian first edition of Churchill's second war speeches volume. The Unrelenting Struggle contains 72 of Churchill's speeches, broadcasts, and messages to Parliament from November 1940 to the end of 1941, terminating with Churchills famous speeches to the U.S. Congress and the Canadian Parliament. Churchill's words during this time resounded during some of the darkest and most uncertain days of the war. This first Canadian edition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is clean, square, bright, and tight, with sharp corners, wrinkling to the spine ends, and a touch of toning confined to the spine heel corresponding to small dust jacket losses. The contents are respectably clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting, mild age-toning, and light spotting to the text block edges. The dust jackets red spine panels are only mildly toned,…

London: Cassell & Company Ltd., 1961. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed copy of the fifth and final volume of Churchill's postwar speech volumes. There was no U.S. edition for this volume and the British first edition was limited to a single printing of 5,000 copies. Moreover, dust jackets for The Unwritten Alliance were notoriously poorly printed, and consequently are almost always rubbed or streaked, with orange showing through the black background. This copy is near fine in a near fine dust jacket, elusive thus. The orange-red cloth binding is square, tight, entirely unfaded, and immaculately clean with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The contents are clean and bright with no previous ownership marks. We would grade this copy as truly fine if not for spotting, which appears confined to the text block edges. The dust jacket is vividly bright and entirely complete, with no loss and retaining the original front flap price. Moreover, it is substantially free of the…

This copy we grade as only good in a good dust jacket despite excellent shelf presentation. This copy juxtaposes an interesting mix of conspicuous strengths and flaws. The red cloth binding remains square, clean, bright, and tight with vivid spine gilt and sharp corners. Unfortunately, there are two vertical tape residue stains on each cover, almost certainly owing to a previous dust jacket protector. The contents show no spotting and no previous ownership names, but nonetheless suffer vertical tape stains from the…
