Tiny ding to spine in title block, internally clean and sound, toned dust jacket with a bit of chipping at extremities, $1.25 price in front flap, dust jacket is now protected in mylar cover. Very attractive copy of this classic anti-slavery novel, which had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S.

First edition, grey cloth, 8vo, 240 pages, inscribed by editor; a clean, well kept copy; dust jacket has a small stain on front cover near spine, now protected in mylar. Inscribed by editor William Blackburn (signed Bill), to artist and author Clare Leighton (which he spells 'Claire') on front free endpaper. Includes the Anne Tyler poems 'The Saints in Caesar's Household' and 'I Never Saw Morning', appearing here in 1963 a year before her first novel was published. An attractive copy that carries some special tidbits of literary history.

Volume II is the first edition from 1727 (ends at Finis after Zoophytes, possibly an original blank leaf following.) Unformly bound, probably in the 19th century in full brown leather with burgundy leather spine labels, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Repaired, probably in the 19th or early 20th century with joint repairs. Some wear to leather, but an attractive set. The mismatched dates mean you get one first edition and one with "considerable improvements." One of the most important of English language dictionaries.

Boards show a bit of wear at extremities, gilt remains bright, internally clean and sound. One of the many striking bindings designed by Margaret Armstrong, and bearing her mono-gram, for the books of Henry Van Dyke.

White discoloration to part of bottom edge of boards, dust jacket has toning to spine and toward edges, 1" closed tear to front panel, original price of 6s. intact. Early book of poetry from Todd, who was a poet, alcoholic, and mystery novelist (as R.T Campbell, best remembered for Bodies in a Bookshop, reprinted later by Dover.)
