Inscribed and signed by the author on blank front free end leaf, and dated May 25, 91. The author's business card is affixed to the same leaf near the lower edge of the page. Numerous penciled notes in the hand of the previous owner are seen throughout this volume. There are also a few leaves with paper-clip creases. The volume is otherwise tight and very clean. The dust jacket remains bright and clean, though shows rubbing and wear along edges and folds. A check is affixed the verso of the dust jacket from the previous owner to the author and dated the same the inscription from the author. The dust jacket is now in a clear Brodart protective sleeve.

Washington: A. O. P. Nicholson, Printer. First Edition . Full Leather. Fair/No Dust Jacket. 4to. House of Representatives Ex. Doc. No. 121 published from 1855-56. Complete in four volumes being I, II, III, & VI. Volumes IV and V were never completed, though the supplemental material designated for them was later published by the U. S. Naval Observatory. All four volumes bound in full calf with red and black leather spine labels. VOLUME I: 556 pages, indexed, plus 11 plates including the nearly six foot long folding plate of the "Panoramic View from the Summit of Santa Lucia, Santiago." Leather covers are rubbed and scuffed. Contemporary inked name on title page, and elsewhere with some ink offsetting and bleed through to adjacent leaves. Scattered foxing, only minimally affecting edges of a few plates. There is some light browning on pages 24/25 where a newspaper clipping had been laid. Volume remains tight and otherwise well intact.

Two plates showing the skull of the grizzly bear, and one beautifully hand colored plate of the bear. Recently bound in green cloth boards, and black cloth with gold lettering on spine. Paper shows some signs of age, and the third (b/w) plate shows slightly creased corners. Contents are otherwise clean and intact.

Dust jacket shows a half inch closed tear from upper edge over top cover, as well as light rubbing and creasing along edges. Jacket remains bright and clean, and is now protected in a clear mylar sleeve.

Author's inscription on blank front free end leaf does not address anyone by name and reads in full "Sept. 15, 1958 / With all good wishes - / Alice M. Robinson." A previous owners name is penciled on the blank front paste down. A newspaper clipping has laid for some time at the rear, resulting in the rear end leaves being darkened. The clipping, related to the author, is still present and now in an acid free sleeve. Dust jacket shows light edge wear and scuffs. There are a couple of penciled bracket marks on the inside front fold, as well as some surface wear from a label being removed. This last wear affects the first word of text on the inside blurb, though "There" is still legible. Dust jacket is now in a clear protective sleeve.
