Scioa is an area in southern Abyssinia (Ethiopia) now called "Shewa". The book deals with 307 different species of birds, including some that are new. Written by the renowned Italian ornithologist Count Adelardo Tommaso Salvadori Paleotti (1835-1923). Original printed wrappers bound in. = A seminal work by the German zoologist and Darwinist Ludwig Hermann Plate (1862-1937), a "disciple of Ernst Haeckel. He wrote a "thorough and extensive defence" of Darwinism, but before Mendel's work had been assimilated in the modern synthesis ...Plate was a proponent of what he called old-Darwinism or orthoevolution, which included a supposedly directed form of natural selection, orthoselection. According to Plate, old-Darwinism follows the ideas of Charles Darwin but also integrates other mechanisms of evolution. He attempted to combine Lamarckism, natural selection and orthogenesis into a unified framework. Many of the factors of the modern synthesis of the early 20th century were first mentioned by Plate. Written by the German medical doctor, botanist, and mineralogist Heinrich Robbert Goeppert (1800-1884). Published in the Maatschappij's Natuurkundige Verhandelingen. Uncut. With widest possible margins. Boards worn at edges, rear board detached; some minor foxing. A very good, unmarked copy.

The plates show crystals formed in cells. The author is the German botanist Ludwig Adolph Timotheus Radlkofer (1829-1927). "Radlkofer became a physician in 1854 and earned a PhD in botany at Jena the following year. He became an associate professor of botany at the University of Munich in 1859 as well as deputy director of the botanical garden and herbarium. In 1892 he was named director of the Botanical Museum. Later plain boards. = The dissertation by the German botanist Ludwig Heinrich Palm (1799-1873) is of interest as it was Ferdinand von Gmelin, who was the presiding medical professor at the Tübingen University. The Münchener Digitalisierungszentrum (MDZ) erroneously lists this as a work by von Gmelin. ADDED [BOUND WITH]: Wiest, A. Untersuchungen über die Pflanzen-geographischen Verhältnisse Deutschlands. Tübingen 1827. 40 pp., three folded lithographed plates [AND] Neuffer, W. Untersuchungen über die Temperatur-Veränderungen der Vegetabilien und verschiedene damit in Beziehung stehende Gegenstände. Tübingen 1829. 41 pp. All are dissertations. The works by Palm and Neuffer are very uncommon, that by Wiest is rare. Pritzel, 6909 (for Palm). Not in Stafleu and Cowan.

Original printed front wrapper bound in. = Rare, detailed, and well-illustrated treatise on the forming of quartz, written by the German mineralogist Gustav Rose (1789-1873). He had a particular interest in the relationship between the crystalline form and the physical properties of minerals, and is credited for developing a mineral system that was a combination of chemistry, isomorphy and morphology. In 1829 with German naturalists Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876), Rose took part in a scientific expedition throughout Imperial Russia (Wikipedia). Some light spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Rare. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1730. Neither in Sinkankas, nor in Ward & Carozzi.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1846. 8vo (20.3 x 12.3 cm). xvi, 884 pp.; numerous tables. Contemporary half calf over linen boards. Spine with gilt lines, and red morocco label with gilt title. Greenish endpapers. Edges speckled red. = Written by the German mineralogist and geologist Carl Johann Bernard Karten (1782-1853). The present copy has two title pages, one as quoted above, the other being "Lehrbuch der Salinenkunde. Erster Theil", thus indicating that it is both a separate work in itself, and part of a larger series of works on salts. It is the first book entirely dealing with worldwide distribution of Kochsalz (kitchen salt, sodium chloride, or NaCl), including the oceans, underscoring the economical importance of this mineral. The work contains a large index. Some wear to the boards, and some very light foxing throughout, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Not in Cat. BM(NH).

[xiv] 227 pp.; four engraved title vignettes, of wich one on the title page, 21 folded engraved plates drawn by Fierer and engraved by Ziegler. Original marbled boards. Spine with red morocco label with gilt title. Red speckled edges. = First edition of this important work. The Austrian polymath (malacologist, taxonomist, geologist, palaeontologist, metallurgist, etc., etc.) Ignaz Edler von Born (1742-1791) invented an amalgamation process for removing gold and silver from various ores. This process, which saved a considerable quantity of fuel in relation to the usual melting of the ore, was adopted in copper mines throughout Europe, and is still widely used. Von Born was given a share of the savings occasioned by its use (DSB). The English edition was published in London in 1791. Our copy is without frontispiece, which seems to be more often lacking. Disbound. = Important contribution by the German zoologist Hermann Friedrich Stannius (1808-1883) to the knowledge of the anatomy and morphology of the brain in dolphins, which are remarkeably similar to those in the higher primates. Well illustrated. Stannius is otherwise known for his entomological work, mainly on Diptera, and as a pharmacologist. He was co-author (with Von Siebold) of the Lehrbuch der vergleichenden Anatomie der Wirbeltiere. The present publication was published in the rare first volume of the Hamburg Natural History Journal Abhandlungen aus dem gebiete der Naturwissenschaften. One plate with some marginal spotting, otherwise a very good clean copy. Rare.

Tübingen, Gustav Bähr, 1839. 8vo (20.5 x 12.2 cm). 28 pp. Paper spine cover. = A seldom-seen thesis on hibernation in various groups of animals, including reptiles and amphibians, written by a German medical doctor from Tübingen about whom little else is known. The medical doctor and professor of natural history and medical sciences Ferdinand Gottlieb von Gmelin (1782-1848) was the promotor, not the author, as correctly noted in the British Museum Catalogue. Some wear and light soiling to the covers, otherwise very good, clean. Cat. BM(NH) p. 684.

Marbled endpapers; speckled edges. = A detailed monograph combining plant-geography, meteorology and geology. Franz Xaver Unger (1800-1870) is perhaps best known for the synthesis of geology and botany: the description and illustration of fossil plants. This is an early work, most of his paleobotanical work dates from after 1850. This copy is dedicated to Carl von Martius and dealing with all aspects of northern Tirol and includes what may be the first geological map of the region around Kitzbühl. Six papers in one. 4to (31.0 x 23.2 cm). 35 [5; 4; 12; 10; 4] pp.; six engraved plates [1; 1; 2 (one shared); 2 (one shared); 1], the two turtle and one cephalopod plate double-sized. Contemporary wrappers with the title added in script. = These six papers by the German paleontologist Christian Erich Hermann von Meyer (1801-1869) were originally published in this order in Von Meyer's own palaeontological journal, simply titled Palaeontographica. They deal with several turtles, birds, and a cuttlefish from Mesozoic deposits and the older Tertiary. Von Meyer himself drew the plates. Uncut. Spine near completely split. Scattered spotting, otherwise good. Very rare. Nissen ZBI, 4734.

Marbled edges. = A rare work by the influential German botanist Hugo [von] Mohl (1805-1872); the man who coined the word protoplasm. DSB: "After a century Mohl remains famous for his works on the microscopic anatomy of plants and for his contributions to knowledge of the plant cell. He studied medicine at Tübingen which concerned botanists throughout the 19th century." Title and preface bound in twice (once before the plates). Inscription in an old hand on the front pastedown, two old stamps on first title (second title clean); light, gradually fading dampstain in the text, unobtrusive foxing throughout. DSB vol. 9 p. 441.
