Baker's third book is this humorous but still serious attempt to explain his relationship with John Updike, whom Baker met a single time in front of a plate of cold cuts at a Harvard Lampoon party in 1984. Baker has read all or nearly all of only eight Updike works and less than half of eight others. This hit or miss -- maybe mostly miss -- knowledge of Updike and Updike's writing is one that serves Baker's sometimes hilarious exploration of the relationship between reader and writer quite well. What we remember of a beloved novel or a favorite author's work may be mis-remembered or irrelevant or, perhaps, life changing, as Baker says his little bit of knowledge of Updike has been for him. Better known as a mid-20th Century film writer and movie producer, Bachmann's mystery and crime novels and short stories are under-appreciated today. "The Ultimate Act" is his fifth novel and features Ben Clancy, a young American lawyer, brought to Paris to protect the interests of an heir to a woman killed by her husband, the CEO of a luxury hotel, in a murder-suicide pact. Boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight, with a slight spine lean. The dustjacket appears to have about an eighth of an inch shaved from the bottom edge, possibly to eliminate some edgewear, o/w except for a crease across the lower corner of the front flap, the dj is clean and whole, not price-clipped.

Joyce's sometimes erotic "stream-of-consciousness" masterpiece that stands today as one of the true classics of Western literature. Both red-cloth covers show tape residue and some minor damage where at one time the dustjacket protector was taped to the top and bottom edges of the boards; a touch of wear along the boards' bottom edges; some tape-stain marks on both end pages; light age-tanning of page margins, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The dustjacket shows some wrinkling and creasing; some age-tanning on the obverse; some minor edgewear but no significant tearing or chipping -- 99% whole.
