Description:
Edmonton: Canadian Institute of Ukranian Studies, 1986 8vo (23 cm), XX, 291 pp. Publisher's laminated wrappers. From the publisher's blurb: "The events in Eastern Europe and Ukraine during World War II are generally little known and often misunderstood, even though it was here that the war lasted the longest and caused devastation on an unprecedented scale. Millions either lost their lives or became slave laborers. In some areas, underground resistance to Nazi and, later, Soviet rule did not subside until the early 1950s. This book will interest those concerned with the history of Ukraine during World War II, as well as the controversy over the presence of alleged war criminals in Canada and the United States. Contributors: Orest Subtelny, Bohdan Krawchenko, Taras Hunczak, Peter J. Potichnyj, Myroslav Yurkevich, Mark R. Elliott, David Matas, Roman Serbyn, S. Paul Zumbakis, Roman Kupchinsky, Myron Kuropas."

Description:
Yale University Press, 2006 8vo (24 cm), XIV, 232 pp. Publishers cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "The remarkable popular protest in Kiev and across Ukraine following the cooked presidential election of November 2004 has transformed the politics of eastern Europe. Andrew Wilson witnessed the events firsthand and here looks behind the headlines to ascertain what really happened and how it will affect the future of the region. It is a dramatic story: an outgoing president implicated via secret tape-recordings in corruption and murder; a shadowy world of political cheats and manipulators; the massive covert involvement of Putin's Russia; the poisoning of the opposition challenger; and finally the mass protest of half a million Ukrainians that forced a second poll and the victory of Viktor Yushchenko. As well as giving an account of the election and its aftermath, the book examines the broader implications of the Orange Revolution and of Russia's serious miscalculation of its level of…

Description:
Harvard University Press, 1989 8vo (24 cm), 256 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. The first half of the twentieth century was in many respects crucial for the evolution and character of Modern Standard Ukrainian. Prior to World War I, the Ukraine was divided between the Russian and the Austro-Hungarian Empires. The standard language lacked uniformity even though the primacy of the standard established in Russian-dominated Ukraine was theoretically accepted in Austrian-ruled Galicia and Bukovina. Up to 1905 the tsarist government forbade the public use of Ukrainian beyond belles-lettres, and excluded it from education until 1917. In the interwar period the country was divided among the USSR, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia, and social and cultural conditions differed drastically. Shevelov's book, based on extensive study of factual material, traces the development of Modern Standard Ukrainian in relation to the political, legal, and cultural conditions within each region. It examines…
