[African American] Original sheet music for "Eliza's Flight", a notable scene from Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Written by Miss M.A. Collier. Music by E.J. Loder. Boston: Oliver Ditson, 1852. Measuring 13.25" x 10". 3 pages. The front cover illustrates a momentous scene from the later adaptations of the novel, depicting a lithographic image of Eliza Harris, a maid fleeing her owner with her son, Harry, in her arms. In her "flight", she traverses the frozen Ohio River into the free state of Ohio. She is pursued by a slave-trader named Haley, who is standing on the Kentucky shore holding a whip, accompanied by his two slaves, Andy and Sam. A plantation house looms faintly in the background. The words of Eliza appear below the image: "God helping me, I crossed the river on the ice; for they were behind me-right behind-and there was no other way." Pages 1-3 contain original strophic piano and vocal instrumentation, opening with lyrics conveying her undying desire for… Read More

Description:
Loose Woman, Poems, Sandra Cisneros. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1994. Uncorrected proof signed by the author. The collection is a reflection on female love and sexuality through the lens of Cisneros' distinctly Chicana style. Her work is poetic social commentary on misogyny, assimilation culture and gender identity in American life. Negligible toning on spine and slight bend to upper right hand of text block not obscuring the text. A gorgeous collection by an important contemporary American poet. Very minor rubbing to spine . Otherwise in very good condition.

Description:
Extensive archive from Methodist minister and revivalist preacher Irving R. Lovejoy from 1860-1888. This archive of over 250 handwritten pages includes 19 handwritten and hand bound sermons, most tied with blue string, totaling 247 pages on subjects ranging from Judgment day to building fraternity between Methodist ministries, and 237 pages of handwritten notes and thoughts for later sermons. Reverend Lovejoy was born in Kansas to ardent abolitionists in the violent years leading up to the Civil War. Multiple attempts were made on his parents' lives and his uncle was murdered for publishing abolitionist materials. Young Lovejoy grew to embrace the ministry like his father before him. Lovejoy was known for his fierce prose, evident throughout the handwritten sermons. "If they are not upon the side of Christ, they are opposed to him," he writes in one, "It is plainly taught that we cannot serve God and Mammon...Listen to Christ calling. Cease persecuting Christ by coming to his call." His sermons… Read More

The Importance of Female Education" in The Unitarian Advocate, Vol. IV- No. III. Boston: Leonard C. Bowles, 1829. Original pamphlet, in original printed wrappers. 5" x 8" inches. 6 pages, 144 total. "It is conceded by all parties that women have an extensive influence in the affairs of the world. It is not alone those who are willing to admit that women enjoy an equal proportion of the gifts of God in their intellectual and physical nature [who admit it] [...] Those who deny equality in every sense, and even those who disbelieve that women have souls, if there are any such, will yet admit their power over mankind to be great and important..." Only three years earlier, the very first American public high schools for girls were opened in New York and Boston; and the year this was published, the first public examination of an American girl in geometry was held.
