Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála Orczy de Orci (1865-1947) is best known as the creator of "The Scarlet Pimpernel." Initially a extremely popular stage play that premiered in 1905, the Pimpernel is the ancestor of later heroes with secret identities. She also authored a series of mysteries featuring "The Old Man in the Corner" [Hubin, p. 314]. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of an early fantasy/fairy tale, translated and illustrated by the Baroness and her husband, Montagu Barstow. Belfast and London: William W. Cleland, Ltd., 1956. Here is an argument against Sinn Fein "separists" who wish for a united Ireland. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Red cloth binding with titling in black on the front cover. Clean text; ix, 57 pages; indexed. Introduction is by Minister to Eire David Gray known for his support for De Valera and his "...outspoken and undiplomatic behavior." This copy has a presentation sheey "With the Compliments of the Government of Northern Ireland." There is no publication date,and COPAC bibliographers suggest several. But he also spent the summer of 1872 in Iceland, where he made his typical keen observations. Penzer notes that he wrote a sequel, but it was never published. These are Near Fine copies of the First Edition, a scarce title. Two volumes, in a nicely-done modern library rebind. The artist has alphabetized Joyce's words into a long list of letters and punctuation. Hamburg, Paris, Bologna: Odyssey Press, 1935. Two volumes (400 pages, 2nd volume continues pages 401 to 792). With additions and corrections by Stuart Gilbert, this is still considered by many to be the definitive text, a controversial subject among Joyce scholars and on which Quercus offers no opinion. These are, however, very nice copies from this First Edition Thus, the Third Printing (August, 1935). "Ulysses" was still banned, and there is the disclaimer "Not to be introduced into the British Empire or the USA" on the rear boards. Very Good condition, issued in wraps: stiff light gray paper covers with maroon lettering that have less wear and tear than is usually encountered. Creasing to the front corners indicates that the work was actually read; minor wrinkling to the head and foot of the spines; minor foxing, seen on the edges. Washington, D.C.: Review & Herald Publishing Association, 1928. This is one of the more interesting Salesman's Sample bools that Quercus has seen, intended for a religious audience. Arthur S. Maxwell (1896-1970) was a prolific author and administrator in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. There is no publication date listed, but LoC's holding of this title puts it at 1928, and the hair and fashion styles seem to indicate that date or perhaps a bit later. Black leather binding with fancy gilt title block; marbled paper endpapers. Next is a fold-out dispalay of cover color choices: blue, red, green, orange, and brown. Following is a selection of stories and illustrations in black and white, then the salesman's order ledger (no entries), and, most interesting, samples of color paperbound choices. Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908) seems to have weathered the storms of controversy and his contribution to the preservation of Black American dialect is acknowledged; it is OK to enjoy the stories! This is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition. No publication date, but identical to the First Edition of 1883 and meeting points for a Routledge First. Per Copac, Quercus believes this to be the issue from 1891. Fifty wonderful black and white illustrations by A.T. Elwes.
