Description:
Zurich: bey Drell, Gessner, Füssli und Comp., 1787 First edition. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt. . Octavo. Minor rubbing. A fine copy. Very scarce. The first full-fledged German study of Shakespeare. Eschenburg was a prominent critic and literary historian who is particularly remembered for his efforts to familiarize his countrymen with English literature. He published translations of John Brown, Daniel Webb, Charles Burney, Joseph Priestley, and Richard Hurd, but his most notable achievement was the first full translation, in prose, of Shakespeare's plays, published in thirteen volumes from 1775 to 1782. The present very substantial work has long chapters on Shakespeare's life, his contemporaries, the theaters and actors of the period, etc., as well as analysis of individual plays, and the sonnets and other poems.

Description:
London: Richard Griffin and Company, Publishers to the University of Glasgow, [1855] First edition. Later marbled boards with printed paper spine label. . Quarto. A very good copy. George Edmonds (1788-1868) was an English teacher, lawyer, and scholar, who lived his entire life in Birmingham. He is remembered principally for the present volume, which enlarges upon John Wilkins' An Essay Towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language (1668). Edmonds believed that the principle reason Wilkins' system wasn't adopted was that it was too hard to pronounce. Here, he proposes a modified pronunciation system for the language. This work is divided into three parts, an "alphabet, classification of radicals, and grammar of the philosophic language;" parallel texts of excerpts from English works of note (Shakespeare, Milton, Locke, the King James Bible, etc.) alongside their translation into the new language; and a dictionary of the new language

Description:
London: Routledge, Warnes, and Routledge, 1859 First edition. This is the second of two books by Emmeline "Emily" Lowe (ca. 1835 – 1897) on the topic of "unprotected" women travelers—that is, women who traveled without the supervision of a man. Lowe had previously recorded her travels in Europe with her mother, Helen E. Lowe (d. 1882), in Unprotected Females in Norway (1857), and returned to the topic for the present work, which narrates the journey they took to Italy in late 1857. . Publisher's purple cloth with gilt spine. Cloth expertly repaired at hinges and head and tail of spine. Pale yellow endpapers. . Octavo. With the bookplate of Larry McMurtry. Foxing to verso of first plate and some toning to leaves. A remarkably bright, near fine copy of an uncommon book. The two women proudly traveled without men, and Lowe remarked in her first book, "ladies alone get on in traveling much better than with gentlemen…men are sure to go into passions and make rows, if things are not right immediately.… Read More
