Some chips and tears to extremeties, reverse side with some practical repairs/strengthening. An inexpensive copy of a scarce book in jacket. Forester's 'U 97' concerns a German submarine which is trying to sink the British Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow, 1918. Written as a drama, in three acts.

With a black and white portrait of the author by Hermann Paul as a frontispiece. All text in French. Publisher's plain soft covers, titled in red and yellow. All edges untrimmed. Clean internally. Covers heavily browned, especially spine, with rubbing to edges and joints, and some creasing to spine. Very good. One of the bizarre sequels to Jarry's hugely controversial puppet-theatre phenomenon 'Ubu Roi' (1896), in which the now-exiled King Turd fathers an Archaeopteryx.

This copy is from the comprehensive James Bond collection assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencilled signature within). His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography.

London: The Bodley Head, 1967. [Modern literature] FILM TIE-IN, the seventh impression of the 1960 text. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.[10] 939 [3]. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine. With the green dust-jacket showing a white bow to the spine, and a second black and white photographic jacket on top, showing stills from Joseph Strick's 1967 film. Both priced at 30s. A black ink ownership to the fly-leaf, and minor toning to edges and endpapers, otherwise crisp and clean internally. Jackets show light wear to edges, and there is light general wear and some minor toning and staining to the spine of the photographic jacket. Extensively illustrated with wood engravings by the author throughout, including a frontispiece and decorated title page, as well as 36 hand-coloured plates. Recent quarter brown morocco with gilt titles and decoration to spine. Marbled boards and endpapers. Quite heavily spotted in some places. Good. Considered the 'Grandfather of Surrealism', Grandville inspired many later masters of the genre, including Lewis Carroll, Max Ernst and Ralph Steadman.
