New York: Macmillan & Co.. New York, Macmillan & Co., 1980. First Edition. First Impression. Russian writer and poem Vadim Shefner, by way of introduction by Sturgeon, provides us with two short novels in this volume. The first, Unman, is translated from the Russian by Alice Stone Nakhimovsky and Alexander Nakhimovsky. The second, Kovrigin's Chronicles is translated by Antonina W. Bouis who also translated the Strugatsky brothers' Roadside Picnic. Shefner wrote one further, longer novel, A Debtor's Hovel [Clute, p1099]. The present volume contributed to Macmillan's Best of Soviet Science Fiction series, which also saw publication of The Friar of Chikola and A Provincial's Wing in New Soviet Science Fiction (Macmillan, 1979). Another short, A Modest Genius, was published in the US in 1969 and 1974. Near fine, price-clipped with some gum residue from a price-sticker, light shelfwear. Not uncommon, but a valuable addition to an often under-represented area of SF collecting. ISFDB has ... Read more

The Unprofessional Vagabond

Thomas Carlisle (Haroun Al-Raschid)

  • Edition: 1st Edition
  • Book condition: Good
  • Quantity available: 1
London: Sampson, Low, Marston, Low & Searle. London, Sampson, Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1873. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A good copy. An interesting piece of Victoriana. Carlisle was one of the early undercover reporters. The Unprofessional Vagabond was the moniker by which he became known. [Richardson, 2016, p77]. The book covers four 'assignments' The Crossing Sweeper (road cleaner), The Fern Merchant (ferns being the tamagotchi of the mid- to late- 19thC), The Tom-Tom Wallah (a minstrel banging a drum), The Toy Merchant. The present copy appears to be John Carlisle's copy (the author's brother as noted in the preface), that said, Locke notes the book as the author's copy. There's a signature to the pastedown and the endpaper, both suggest to me John. The pastedown signature is shorter and has written underneath it 'his book'. But there's more! Pasted to the rear of this copy, is part V. Presumably extracted from the Globe, within which these pie ... Read more

Utopia

Thomas More

  • Edition: 1st Thus Edition
  • Book condition: Good
  • Quantity available: 1
London: Richard Chiswell. London, Richard Chiswell, 1684. First Thus.First Impression. Hardback. First edition translated by Gilbert Burnet (often quoted as preferable to Ralph Robinson's). One of the most important taproot texts for modern speculative fiction and a milestone in the genre's history. A lovely recent binding, marred by loss from every leaf that has been expertly repaired but still pretty obvious. A little spotted. A rare edition. Pagination: [24], 206. First leaf is a blank, followed by the title page and then the prologue. Our previous copy had to blanks before the title page, though the collation on this copy seems correct. Utopia is one of the most important works to have influenced the field of speculative fiction. In the 500 years since its publication, there have been hundreds of imitators, and the field would be a very different landscape without it. [6441, Hyraxia Books]. . Good. Hardback. 1st Thus Edition. 1st Printing. 1684.
