FIRST EDITION inscribed 1893, French text, small 4to, 230 x 185 mm, 9 x 7¼ inches, cloth backed cream covers with chromolitho illustration to upper cover of dog in bath tub and Patapouf in huge bathrobe, 12 text pages, no title page called for, 8 very pretty chromolitho plates (2 by Lizzie Lawson), and sepia illustrations in the text. Patapouf is a 5 year old boy (but looks much younger) learning about life with his brothers and sisters. Head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, a couple of small pale water stains in margin of upper cover, a couple to lower cover with a few tiny brown marks, first and last pages lightly foxed, inscription to reverse of front endpaper. Expertly restitched with new matching spine, covers slightly stained, inscription to inside of upper cover, offsetting to title page from frontispiece, a couple of small light stains to text, 1 tiny hole with loss of 1 letter, all easily legible. Minute touch of rubbing to corners of boards, very small area of slight bubbling to lower cover next to top of spine, no inscriptions, minute pale grey smudge to face of 1 little girl on title page, barely visible (see image), otherwise a Fine clean bright tight copy. Slim 8vo, approximately 220 x 135 mm, 8½ x 5¼ inches, LACKS THE CHART, a very good facsimile has been inserted, pages:113-168 with engraved portrait frontispiece, nicely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half calf, gilt lettering and rules to spine, marbled boards with dividing gilt rules, new cream endpapers. Printing on page 137 a little pale, but all text legible, pale age-browning , 2 small neat edge repairs, otherwise a very good copy. Although short, the article is rich in detail, outlining early Dutch discoveries and the landfalls of William Dampier before Captain Cook's survey of the east coast. Approximately 200 x 130 mm, 8 x 5¼ inches, portrait frontispiece of Urbain Jurgensen, 15 illustrations in the text, 48 pages, the last page advertising other books, original publisher's dark green pebbled card covers with title mounted on upper cover, number 294 printed on the back of title page. Slight fading to spine, front and rear endpapers age-browned, 2 previous booksellers' small labels at bottom inside front cover, (Hadfield & Garner) otherwise a very good copy.
