It first appeared in 1929, followed by the first Grosset & Dunlap reprint in 1932. Our copy was published on, or after, 1940. There are no interior illustrations, and only one page of ERB titles listed in the publisher's advertisement at the end of the book. The top edge is stained green (see Zeuschner 641). The book is in very good condition, showing only slight shelf wear: a tiny bump to the top right of the front board, with a small pinhole beside it; a trace of soiling to the rear board; and a faint 'star' rubber stamp to the inside rear board. Overall, in very good condition. No dust jacket.

This is an early G&D reprint (Zeuschner 605), probably from the late 1920s, as the next G&D reprint, in 1940, lacked any J. Allen St. John interior artwork (Zeuschner 607). There are 25 ERB titles listed at the end of the book, and 27 on the rear flap of the dust jacket, the art for which shows Tarzan riding the back of a lion as he is about to plunge a sword into its side. The book is in very good condition, showing only the slight shelf wear. The binding is tight, the contents clean, and the endpapers are unmarked. The accompanying dust jacket is the original - it is not a facsimile. A piece of the front panel is missing - about 2' x 3' from the lower right. Burt reprint, published sometime between 1915 to 1928. There is a six-page catalogue at the end of the book, of this publisher's 'Popular Copyright Novels', listing titles alphabetically from 'A' to 'N'. It does not appear that any pages with ads for 'O' to Z' are missing, or have been removed. The famous Tarzan silhouette illustration is reproduced (on glossy stock) as the frontispiece and is in decent condition. The boards are soiled and rubbed at the edges, with a small stain to the top of the rear board. The original endpapers have been professionally replaced. The half-title page had suffered loss to the edges, and this defect has been remedied by our conservator. Just less than half of page 5/6 has been torn away, and our conservator has laid-in blank japon paper to maintain the integrity of the page. Colour photocopies of pages 5… Read More

Hardcover. pp. 202.,8vo,,,This is a special issue of the first edition of this title, 150 copies only being bound from the sheets of the first trade edition, each of which is numbered (this being #202) and signed by the author on a inserted page, preceded by a cancel title page bearing the imprint of London Limited Editions. There is virtually no information easily available about this imprint, but it appears that it was an off-shoot of the London bookseller and publisher, Bertram Rota Limited, as the address and telephone number for London Limited Editions are the same as that for Bertram Rota (31 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London), and they are well known for their specialty in modern first editions. It also appears that these limited editions were only issued from 1985 to 1994, each title being bound similarly (but quite differently from the trade edition), the style being half cloth over marbled boards, with the author, title, and series name being lettered and boxed… Read More
