Description:
Nürnberg, Adam Ludwig Wirsing, [1770-]1772. Two large, printed sheets (40.0 x 24.8 cm). Engraved and originally hand-coloured plate, numbered and captioned. = Two fine plates from possibly the first but certainly one of the most beautiful hand-coloured nidological works ever, and almost never found complete - even individual plates, such as these, of the bird, and its nest and eggs, are rare. With two different captions. However, the Rothschanz (black redstart) and "Garten Rothschwanz" ("garden redstart") are synonymous. "The black redstart is a small passerine bird in the genus Phoenicurus. Like its relatives, it was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family, but is now known to be an Old World flycatcher. Other common names are Tithy's redstart, blackstart and black redtail" (Wikipedia). Apparently, this beautiful little songbird goes under several vernacular names, both in Germany and in Great Britain. The image is exceptionally large. The first… Read More

Engraved and originally hand-coloured plate, numbered and captioned. = A fine plate from possibly the first but certainly one of the most beautiful hand-coloured nidological works ever, and almost never found complete - even individual plates, such as this one, are rare. It shows the North American ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis), with a remarkable blue bill. It "is a duck from North America and one of the stiff-tailed ducks. Ruddy ducks were imported into the UK in 1948 by conservationist Sir Peter Scott. As a result of escapes from wildfowl collections in the late 1950s, they became established in Great Britain, from where they spread into Europe. By the year 2000, the population had increased to around 6,000 individuals. This duck's aggressive courting behavior and willingness to interbreed with the endangered native white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), of southern Europe, caused concern amongst… Read More

Edges yellow. = A very uncommon, early work on the properties of air, written by the French chemist Urbain François Rouland (d. 1824), a nephew of the French obstetrician, chemist and phycisist Joseph-Aignan Sigaud de Lafond (1730-1810). Sigaud de Lafond published on gasses too, and his Essai sur différentes espèces d’air-fixe ou de gas , pour servir de suite aux Elemens de Physique was edited and expanded by Rouland and also published by Gueffier, in 1785. Rouland published on electricity too. Provenance: stamp of Ernst August, King of Hanover, with his monogram, on the half-title and title blank versos. One map shows Russia west of the Ural, the other the whole country, including Siberia, in 1800. This map is reminiscent of that in the work of Pallas. Copies with both maps on Rusia are very rare. A German edition was published simultaneously but is very rare too; there are no recent auction records. Spine with gilt bands and title. = One of the classic works by the famous French mineralogist and chemist René Just Haüy (1743-1822) on crystallography. This is the first edition of Hauy's survey of the results of crystallography and chemical analysis in the relation to the classification of minerals, giving a detailed description of the successes and difficulties he encountered. “Chemical composition traditionally decided the four traditional classes in mineralogy - acidiferous (salts), earthy, non-metallic combustible, and metallic - and the order and genera; the form of the constituent molecule determines the species … In [t]his Tableau comparatif …, Hauy emphasized the invariability of the form and the composition of the constituent molecule of a species but was forced to admit that the definite proportions were often blurred by… Read More
