Flörsheim/Main: Ketelhodt, 2014. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Slipcase. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Design, photography, letterpress and bookbinding by Ines von Ketelhodt. Photographs are digitally printed on book-printing paper, texts are printed with polymer-plates in letterpress onto glassine paper. "The three booklets contain photographs which were taken with long exposure times on May 5, 2014 at Times Square in New York. Because of the time exposure, light, time, positions and situations are added together. It captures a phase of time that we normally cannot perceive. A cinematic sequence is generated by turning the pages of all three volumes in parallel. Each booklet starts with a motto by Roland Barthes from "Camera Lucida. Reflections on Photography": volume 1 in French original, volume 2 in German translation, volume 3 in English translation." (from the artist) Roland Barthes: "The image, says phenomenology, is an object-as-nothing. Now, in the Photograph, what I posit is…

Description:
New York: Khepri Press, 2014. Limited Edition. Stamped Cloth. Fine. Limited Edition. Stamped Cloth. The Emerald Tablet one of the root texts of alchemy is a brief alchemical work attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. Historically the work is part of the Hermetic corpus and seems to have the same origins as the rest of the Corpus Hermeticum. The text was discovered, according to one version of the legend, by Apollonius of Tyana. After an earthquake a passageway opened up beneath a statue that led to a subterranean chamber. Seated there was a statue of Hermes Trismegistus holding a tablet of green stone (smaragda) engraved with the text of what is now known as the Emerald Tablet. The earliest known surviving texts are attributed to Apollonius of Tyana and it is the Arabic and Latin versions that are considered in this new work. This edition is a collection of new translations of those earliest extant Arabic and Latin versions with accompanying essay and commentary. It is a distillation of the chapter on…

Portland, ME: Artist Book, 2007. Limited Edition. Loose pamplets in wooden box. Fine in Fine Box.. Limited Edition. Loose pamplets in wooden box. A book in the form of a recipe box. In the artist's words, "Taking the Soup is a collection of stories I have written and illustrated with my photographs and drawings, looking at the origin, myth, ritual or history of foods that we often take for granted. "Taking the Soup" and other expressions coming out of the Irish famine of the mid-eighteen hundreds, such as souperism and souper, are euphemisms for accepting food or other material benefits on the condition of forsaking one's own spiritual allegiance to accept another's." The stories are told one twenty illustrated cards, each with a "cover" image illustrating the given story, all printed on an Indigo press. The stories are organized by subject cards under the headings: Food as Metaphor; Connection; and Power & Weapon. The author/artist has committed twenty-five percent of the sale of each volume to a…

Description:
New York: Mark Batty Publisher, 2005. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Archival Box. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of the best explorations of London sex work adverts. Drawn from Caroline Archer's collection of tart cards and her interviews with printers, designers, artists, sex workers, etc. Tart cards emerged in the 1960s and became prevalent in the United Kingdom throughout the 1980s and beyond. The 1990s and the evolving Russian takeover of the sex trade in London saw a marked change, from generally offset printed and/or hand written to glossy and 'generalized' cards. Cell phones and the loss of phone booths has radically shrunk their visibility. This is one of a specially bound limited edition, originally of 60 copies but in fact only approximately 30 were ever bound. 'Corset bound' in pink cloth and black lace and containing two bound in pockets with approximately 35 original tart cards. Tight, bright, and unmarred. 'Corset bound' with pink cloth spine, black cloth boards with lace…

Description:
Northampton, MA: Dan Kelm, 2018. Limited Edition. Fine in Fine Case. Limited Edition. The creation of Templum Elementorum (Sanctuary of the Elements) was initiated by an invitation in 1995 to produce a book for the Smithsonian Institution Library exhibition Science and the Artist's Book. Inspired by Biringuccio's De la pirotechnia (On working with fire), first published in 1540, Templum Elementorum is a stylized version of the alchemical furnace known as the Tower of Athanor, as pictured in Biringuccio's book. "Athanor" refers to the "undying" fire which is achieved by the use of the self-feeding fuel hopper at the center of the furnace. Kelm created a book sculpture comprised of four glass cylinders and metal bindings â one for each of the elements. Together they represent a furnace within which the four alchemical elements are operating â earth bath, water bath, air furnace, and fire box. Colors, symbols, words, and metals contained on the cylinders and in the bindings all correspond to…
