He is also known for his active stance in opposition of slavery. His poetry was quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. many times in the course of the civil rights movement. William Cowper (1731 – 1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him "the best modern poet", whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak. Featuring a portrait vignette frontispiece, a vignette of Cowper's mother, and numerous illustrations in the text by various 'eminent artists'. Including Table Talk, The Progress of Error, Truth, Expostulation, Hope, Charity, Conversation, Retirement, and some further minor poems. With a bookbinder's stamp of Westley's and Co, London, to the rear pastedown. In a decorative imitation leather cloth binding. Externally, some shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean with foxing to the first and last few pages and just the occasional spot. There is a copperplate ink inscription to the front free-endpaper. Very Good
