Having been deemed insane and incarcerated between 1763 and 1765, he became an evangelical Christian. His religion led him to write many hymns. He is also known for his active stance in opposition of slavery. His poetry was quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. many times in the course of the civil rights movement.
