Some toning to front and back "covers"; very good. C.1930s travel brochure for Taos, New Mexico issued by The Don Fernando Hotel, named for late 17th and early 18th century Spanish Conquistador, Don Fernando de Chavez. The amenities of the hotel are touted-including its Spanish-revival décor and "Indian Dining Room Girls"-as is its proximity of Taos to the Native American Pueblo peoples. Includes a calendar of annual events and festivals in Taos such as Buffalo or Deer Dances in January, Lenten processions of "Penitenties," the Corn Dance in June, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi in October, and a Christmas Eve "Firelight Procession."

First edition, first printing of Walter Harris' recounting of his 1893 expedition to Morocco's vast Tafilet oasis, providing a meticulous narrative of his interactions with the locals and his exploration of the area. A vivid portrayal with valuable insights into the state of Morocco during the late ninenteenth century.

[United States Navy. 1954.] [16]pp. Recruitment Pamphlet. 8½ x 7 inches. Color pictorial wraps. Very good clean example with short separation to rear wrapper. "Honored and Respected." "No Finer Men. No Finer Service." "Your Place in the Sub Reserve." These are some of the headlines within Take 'Er Down in the Submarine Reserves, a 1954 recruitment piece which is rich in design, visually striking, and of which we find no other extant copy. But we do discover, a companion piece of sorts: the 1954 U.S. Navy film production "Take 'Er Down" -a patriotic paean to America's nuclear-powered submarines; a short film meant for a general audience, but a film clearly indicated to serve as a persuasive pitch, a subtle siren's call for men to enlist. In our publication, Sub Reserve men are seen smiling as they pop up through manholes, peering through periscopes, wearing sound-powered headsets, being taught by instructors, or moving in tandem throughout the vessel. First edition of this collection of privately-printed poems written by Archer Milton Huntington (1870 -1955), philanthropist, scholar and founder of The Hispanic Society of America in New York City, Brookgreen Gardens and the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia. One of 100 copies hand printed on all rag paper. Set by hand in Centaur and Arrighi types.

The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1935. Quarto. Printed green wraps. Very good. A handsome example of this scarce Depression-era California phone book. Printed in three columns, names, addresses, and phone numbers for residential and commercial entities, some sections illustrated. This copy was used in Nevada City, California.

An ephemeral program for a reading given at Temple University in 1988 by Chinua Achebe, the award-winning Nigerian author of Things Fall Apart. Achebe may have given a reading from his 1987 novel Anthills of the Savannah.

Over 580 entries including paintings, sculptures, plaster casts (including those in the "Antique Rooms"), and reliefs. Artists include Washington Allston, Thomas Sully, Gilbert Stuart, Rembrandt Peale, Emanuel Leutze, Hiram Powers, William Rush, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Angelica Kauffman, Benjamin West, and Charles Willson Peale.

[Kansas, 1890]. Each printed on silk, approx. 6 x 2¼ inches. In five color-ways: pink, cream, mauve, pale green, and golden yellow. Some creasing; overall, very good. Ten political campaign ribbons for independent candidate Henry Wilson Scott (1866-1935)-"The People's Candidate"-running in 1890 for judge of the Sixteenth Judicial District in Kansas.  The then-sitting Register of the Larned land office, Scott lost his Fall election by only five votes. After taking time that winter to finish his book, Distinguished American Lawyers (1891), Scott removed to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Territory where he sought appointment as U.S. Attorney. Instead, President Grover Cleveland appointed him as associate justice of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma Territory. Now a Democrat, Scott became embroiled in factional politics, even jailing two leading Republican newspapermen multiple times. "In later years Braque, Eugene Jolas, Matisse, Andre Salmon, and Tristan Tzara published jointly a Testimony against Gertrude Stein (1935), in which they denied her understanding of their work, of Cubism, and of painting in general. According to Braque, 'Miss Stein understood nothing of what went on around her'; and Salmon echoed this condemnation: 'I had thought, along with all our friends, that she had really understood things. An important report detailing native Americans conflicts on the Texas frontier and the activities of the Texas Rangers during the 1850s. Events are documented with testimonies such as: "several citizens and one negro have been murdered, a boy has been taken into captivity and a large amount of property stolen."; in the "eastern portion of Comanche county... a band of Indians were in said county collecting all the most valuable horses, property of the county, destroying every kind of stock, murdering and capturing our citizens" ; "The second chief had rushed into the conflict with the friendly Indians. Stories of old Rangers such as Captain Jack Hays, Rip "Rest in Peace" Ford, Captain Leander S. McNelly, and Frank Hamer who tracked down Bonnie and Clyde. Signed by the author, a public information officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety (which includes the Texas Rangers).

[Boston; nearby; c. 1872-1873]. 3 items. Small handbill. Contract form. Agent's business card. From sizes 2¼ x 3¾ to 8½ x 5¼ inches. All, near fine. An ephemeral record of the brief, exploited lives of the Fairy Sisters, two diminutive performers often touted as the smallest persons in the world. The sisters toured New England in 1872 and 1873. The Fairy Sisters, Catherine Foster ("Cassie" 1865-1875) and Victoria Foster (1871-1874), are here described in a small handbill, (3¾ x 3 inches): "The smallest of Lilliputian and the greatest of Musical prodigies...." This promotional group was used by Fred A. Pickering of Boston, Massachusetts, agent for the Fairy Sisters and whose business card is included. The printed ephemera also includes a blank exhibition contract.

Promotional item for the famous 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" championship boxing match that pitted Muhammad Ali against George Foreman in Zaire. The fight was marketed by John Daly, Henry A. Schwartz, and Don King and reportedly almost one billion viewers tuned in to watch the epic battle.

In various formats, approx.  3¼ x 4¾ inches to 6 x 4½ inches, and various paginations, approx. 10 to 36 pages each. Scattered ownership inscriptions and kept by Mrs. Walter Swoope. Near Fine. Collection of 13 women's club yearbooks or program books from Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. The Woman's Club was organized in 1936 via the consolidation of three earlier women's clubs, the oldest going back to 1912. Seen here are 11 club yearbooks comprising the club's very first "Year Book," 1936-1937 and various year books from the mid-1940s to the mid 1950s (the bulk). Also present: two yearbooks or booklets (1960-1962) from another Philipsburg women's club, The Twentieth Century Club, apparently organized in 1924. The yearbooks include such information as club officers, department chairmen and committees, lists of members, by-laws, and, importantly, the club's program of meeting for the coming year.

[Cheltenham? 1788]. Folio, printed satin silk broadside. 22 x 7½ inches. Small wood device of Royal coat of arms at head. Former fold lines; small rents; soil and stains. Rare and unlocated. Eighteenth century satin silk broadside recording a Royal visit to Cheltenham in 1788. Goding's Norman's History of Cheltenham (pp342-343) describes the pageantry and fanfare of the King and Queen of England who came to Cheltenham theatre on this day, for the last time of the season, before returning to Court. This visit put Cheltenham on the map and secured its reputation as a resort destination. The Royal Couple came to Cheltenham to "take the waters" as the discovery of its mineral springs had transformed it into a Spa. Thus, the twenty-four line homage makes immediate mention of this: "When the MAJESTIC Spirit of the LAW, / Feels a Relief - from Cheltenham's humble Spa." Jacob Tileston Brown (1863-1947) was among the first Black American ministers to write Sunday school literature. (Houston Bryan Roberson) Pages 1-13 of Brown's book provides a biographical sketch of his life and prints his statement explaining why he wrote this book, written in Texas when Brown lived there. Brown was born enslaved at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Martin R. Delaney was a friend to his father. He schooled at Hampton Institute in Virginia and by age sixteen Brown was teaching school in Great Bridge, Virginia.
