Description:
London: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1936. Second Edition. Very good. Robert Gibbings. 5 x 3 5/8 in (125 x 90 mm); 23 pp.; title page printed in gold, the rest black in 110t Caslon's Old Face Type. 4 wood-engravings by ROBERT GIBBINGS. Red cloth binding, black title on spine, without its dust-jacket. Copy clean with very faint spots on the enpapers. [Pertelote 115]. Translated by Hannah Waller and with a note on Pushkin and the tale by Raïssa Lomonossova, "This diverting little book had considerable success and the translation was hailed as one of the best renderings of Pushkin ever made." (Pertelote 115) The title in gold adopted a process where the page was printed in colored ink, then dusted over with powdered gold, which adheres to the ink. A limited edition of 100 copies was bound in gold cloth and sold for 1 Guinea, but collectors did not hesitate over the high price, for such a tiny book. The GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS was founded by Harold Midgely Taylor in 1920 with the object of publishing… Read More

Description:
1640. Etching on hand made cream laid paper, 2 7/8 x 6 1/4 inches (72 x158 mm), 1/4 inch margins. In very good condition with minor edge wear. Adhered with adhesive along the left top sheet edge to an oblong archival paper matrix. This impression is a reverse image copy of the original work from Silvestre's series of 12 etchings entitled Antiche et moderne vedute di Roma, first published around 1640. Subsequent to its initial publication the edition was republished with the image in reverse by Melchoir Kusel in the later part of the 17th century, and by renowned British publisher Thomas Major in the middle part of the 18th century. Given the nature of the paper and the lack of text in the image we believe this to be a 18th century impression, perhaps from the edition published by Thomas.

London: George Humphrey, 1825. Etching and engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on cream wove paper, 10 x 7 3/4 inches (252 x 195 mm), trimmed to the platemark. Siginificant condition issues include multiple repaired tears in the lower center sheet area, thick adhesive residue throughout on the verso, and a corner tear that extends approximately 1.5 inches into the image area in the lower right. There is also an irregular trapezoidal area of bright discoloration with associated small surface losses at the top left sheet corner. Despite the condition issues, the pigments are fresh and bright. This portrait of King George the III's son was published in the same year that Beethoven's Ninth Symphony premiered in London.

1943. Etching on cream laid paper, 3 1/2 × 1 3/4 inches (89 × 44 mm), full margins. Signed in pencil and inscribed "Trial State III." No visible defects, with an unevenly trimmed sheet. A beautifully inked impression with all of the fine details printing clearly. Born in 1887 in Washington DC, John Taylor Arms studied at Princeton University, and ultimately earned a degree in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1912. With the outbreak of W.W.I, Arms served as an officer in the United States Navy, and it was during this time that he turned his focus to printmaking, having published his first etching in 1919. His first subjects were the Brooklyn Bridge, near the Navy Yard, and it was during his wartime travel that Arms created a series of extraordinarily detailed etchings based on gothic cathedrals and churches he visited in France and Italy (the plate for Guardians of the Spire was created in 1921). He used what was available to him, namely sewing needles and a magnifying… Read More

1942. Etching on buff wove J Whatman handmade paper with a partial watermark, 3 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches (89 x 44 mm), full margins. Signed in pencil and inscribed "III" in the lower margin. A proof impression before the trimming of the plate (Fletcher states only two trial proof impressions of the first state before the trimming of the plate). Printed by the artist. No visible defects. A beautifully inked impression with all of the fine details printing clearly. [Fletcher 378]. Miniature Series No. 31 Paper: Arms was typical of the artists of this period - he was obsessed with paper, a mania for collecting paper that could/would improve an edition. The quantity he left after his death, distributed by his wife to fellow artists, witnesses his love for finely made paper -paper interesting because of texture, color, distinctive weave. The earliest paper known to have been used by Arms came from a Baptismal Register Kirchen Ordnung, The Reformed Church, Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1708,… Read More
