Smit's Vly" in lower Manhattan, at the intersections of Maiden Lane and Pearl St. near the present-day location of South St. Seaport. Translated as "Smith's Valley", the site was named for the city's first blacksmith shop, established by Cornelis Clopper. His shop became an important gathering place, as Long Island farmers passed through the property on their way to the city. The name was later anglicized to "Fly Market", and became an important outdoor market through the 18th and 19th centuries. By the time this print was published, it was New York's oldest market.
