Joseph Long, mathematical, optical and hydrometer instrument maker. The mathematical instrument maker Thomas Bedwell was established in the sixteenth century.

Edward Archibald Rathmell Wilson (1875–1955) an actor, playwright, author, traveller, art collector and dilettante. A Rosicrucian, "Sine Metu", initiated 20/04/1913. A Theosophist. A regular contributor to the Occult Review and the Golden Dawn Magazine of The Brothers of The Path. He wrote the preface to Anthony Greville-Gascoigne's 'The Way of an Initiate' 1940. "I have, you will find, made this title include not only trains of steel but also trains of thought".
A scarce oddity. The writing is in the style of his Occult Log Books for the Golden Dawn Magazine. For whatever reason, his name in this publication is spelled with one, rather than two "l" s.

William Halse Rivers Rivers (1864-1922) FRCP, FRS. Anthropologist, ethnologist, neurologist, psychologist. A detailed study of the people "of the Nilgiri Hills in Southern India". His innovative methodology in this work was later adopted as standard anthropological practice.

Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) British Enlightenment polymath. Scientist, theologian, philosopher he was the first to identify oxygen and other core gases. He invented soda water. In 1794 he emigrated to Pennsylvania where was befriended by Thomas Jefferson as 'one of the few lives precious to mankind'. His achievements have only recently begun to be acknowledged. His metaphysical works influenced Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, and Herbert Spencer.

A near fine copy with no inscriptions. Freya Stark (1893-1993) a fearless and indomitable traveller. Her unique collection of photographs range from North Africa to the Levant, South Arabia to Turkey, Persia, Soviet Central Asia, China, the Alps, Himalayas, the gorges of the Tigris, the arid wastes of Central Asia and the lush palm groves of the Wadi Hadhramout, the wilds of Kurdistan. She sought hospitality among Shamar Bedouin, Kashgar herdsmen, Kurdish camel-herders and yurt-dwelling Turkomans. Many of her photographs evoke a world now inaccessible. Her godson Malise Ruthven adds to her writings with a short biography.
