Edinburgh: Unpublished, 1850. Portraits in childhood of the Edinburgh-born women's rights campaigner and future author of British Freewomen: Their Historical Privilege, Charlotte Carmichael, by her father, the landscape artist James Ferrier Carmichael and by herself. Charlotte Carmichael (1840-1929) was part of the first university level classes for women in Edinburgh under Professor David Masson at a time when the university was not open to women. She was active in dress reform for women, published widely and contributed to Shakespeare studies, marrying Henry Stopes with whom she had a daughter, Marie Stopes who curated this collection - most of the drawings have her notes on the verso and on the portfolio containing the collection. The collection is housed in a large portfolio on which Marie Stopes has written 'M C Stopes - art' as well as adding explanatory annotations to many of the works. Thus a portrait of Charlotte Carmichael has Stopes's note: 'By [James Ferrier] Carmichael - of mother etc -… Read More

Description:
1960. Remarkable collection of Tibetan Sherpa art collected, and possibly commissioned, by a member of Sir Edward Hillary's 'Silver Hut' expedition to Mount Makulu in the Himalayas, including an image of the mountaineers scaling the peak. This collection is introduced by its owner, an unidentified member of Hillary's 1960 expedition (possibly George Lowe), in a two page pencilled text which he has written over the disbound opening pages of a large sketch pad (26x37cm). This seems to have been drafted after the expedition left Kathmandu and before their lengthy acclimatisation at altitude had begun. There are a couple of gaps in the text, possibly left to be filled in later with the relevant information. The mountaineer describes himself as 'a layman with this largely scientific expedition' who is admiring of the 'painstaking research our physiologists are even now preparing to undertake under never-before experienced conditions' - the expedition yielded now standard research findings into human… Read More

Description:
London: Kronos Press, 1973. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. Philip Cannon, Te Deum for choir, organ and brass, 1973, Kronos Press; small folio with personal letter laid in to Colin Davis discussing Cannon's works including Son of Man. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which Davis conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. Most of the scores are full size performance versions, several very large indeed in order to accommodate the scoring of a post-Schoenberg orchestra. Davis achieved global recognition for his conducting with a particular enthusiasm for the music of Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Tippett. Very Good 1973
