T. E. LAWRENCE

Brent, Peter

New York, Putnam, 1975., US first edition, hard bound ( missing dj ) , 7 x 10, VG/VG condition, maroon cloth, with gilt titles, 232 pages, very well illustrated, bibliog., index. -------------------------------------------- Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, CB, DSO (16 August 1888 – 19 May 1935), known professionally as T. E. Lawrence, was a British Army officer renowned especially for his liaison role during the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916–18. The extraordinary breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, have earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia, a title popularised by the 1962 film based on his life. Lawrence's public image was due in part to American journalist Lowell Thomas' sensationalised reportage of the revolt as well as to Lawrence's autobiographical account Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1922).

Office of Air Force History,, GPO, Washington, 1983, first edition, VG condition ( very slight corner bump), 7 x 10, xxv, 899 pages, many illustrations & maps. ------------------From the Foreword: Throughout the War in Southeast Asia, American and Vietnamese forces relied heavily on tactical airlift to satisfy the logistical demands of the conflict. Few tactical airlift missions in Vietnam could be called routine; weather, terrain, enemy action, and the usual snafus saw to that. Tactical airlift forces lost 122 aircraft and 229 crew members in Vietnam, many while attempting to deliver critical cargo to friendly units surrounded or besieged by enemy forces. Some crew members earned prestigious decorations, including the Medal of Honor, for their performance in the face of enemy fire; others died lonely deaths from causes that will probably go forever unrecorded. But as this book consistently documents, the cargo virtually always go through when it was within the realm of possibility

Wingham Press, Kent, UK, 1991. Hardcover w/ dj, 6 x 9, VG/VG condition, 2nd printing, 221 pages, illustrations, list of confirmed victories, index. -------------------------Stories by fighter pilots of their experiences, especially during the Battle of Britain, have been numerous. With this thought in mind Geoffrey Page has written a book that not only tells of his wartime exploits but also dwells on the mental effects of severe injuries to a pilot, both during his hospital treatment and on his return to flying duties. Geoffrey Page spent two years in hospital suffering from severe burns and gunshot wounds. It was during this period that he and other badly burnt aircrew formed the Guinea Pig Club. The Guinea Pig Club was formed with the idea of consuming quantities of beer in each other's company but out of this was to grow a more serious side which was to develop under the presidency of their plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald Mclndoe. This more sober aspect of the club was that, as a band o ... Read more

London 2000, Cassell, reprint of 1998 ed, hard bound w/dj, 6x9, viii, 213 pages, VG/VG cond., several illustrations & maps, glossary, bibliog. ----------------------------In 1942 a nineteen year old John Nunneley found himself reporting for duty to his new company commander. He announced himself to a naked man squatting in a collapsible canvas bath sluicing himself down with an old canned fruit tin. Politely climbing to his feet the Major welcomed him with a wet handshake and an invitation to help himself from the whisky bottle on the table. Thus John Nunneley's life with the King's African Rifles began in true colonial style. But it was a life that was almost to end fighting the elite `White Tigers' of the Imperial Japanese Army in Burma's Kabaw Valley, the notorious `Valley of Death'. -----------------------This is the story of one young man's odyssey through war, from soldiering in Africa in an exotic regiment to the often terrifying business of fighting a ... TALES OF A WAR PILOT

Kirkland, Richard C

Washington, Smithsonian Institution Press 1999, US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 x 9, FINE/FINE CONDITION, iii, 160 pages, illustrations -----------------------A World War II pilot is forced to bail out over the jungles of New Guinea, where he survives alligators, malaria, and cannibals. A young Australian woman tells a fighter pilot that she hates all Yanks because her brother has been shot down by an American—could the pilot be that same American? A huge, seemingly invincible Convair B-36 disappears on Valentine's Day, 1950, with an atomic bomb in its bay. At the 8055 MASH the real-life Hawkeye Pierce's habit of playing elaborate jokes on his comrades leads to a harrowing nighttime helicopter rescue—and to the pilot's being recommended for both a medal of valor and a court martial. --------------------------------------------------------------Vividly capturing the experiences of the author and his fellow airmen, these stories focus on the people who s ... Constable, London, 1998. UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 248 pages, illus, notes. ---------------------------------------- Ever since the tank first burst its way onto the battlefield its combined characteristics of firepower, protection and mobility have made it a truly formidable weapon system. In the Second World War tanks were responsible for the lion's share of success in the ground battle wherever they were properly employed. However, a tank is only as good as its crew, who are required to live and fight in the confines of a noisy, uncomfortable mobile armoured 'box', crammed with explosives and fuel, knowing that they could at any moment be blown to pieces. Lieutenant Colonel George Forty, who himself served for 32 years in the Royal Tank Regiment and was then Curator of the world-famous Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset, has collected together a wide range of first-hand accounts from the crewmen of both allied and Axis powers. ... TARGET MAYFLOWER

Hirschhorn, Richard

New York, 1977,Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, . fine/fine condition, . It is spring of 1944. Everywhere the Nazi war machine is in retreat. Hitler rules a weakening Reich from a mountain hideaway. In England and the United States, troops and convoys are assembling for the invasion of France. And in the headquarters of the Kreigsmarine, Grosse-admiral Erich von Eyssen has come up with a plan-a plan so ingenious and diabolical that it could set back the Allied war effort for a year or more, till the "final" weapons of the Reich are perfected. It is, quite simply, a plan for a Nazi invasion of the United States. The plan is built from a set of seemingly random ingredients-a handful of specially modified submarines; a POW camp near the Maine coast in which are interred members of the elite Afrika Korps; a secret American train, hurtling down the coast with a precious cargo of uranium. It requires split-second timing and iron nerve. A ... Read more
