Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1899. First edition (precedes the UK edition). Small octavo (203 x 137 mm.). ix, [2], 303, [1] pp. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering, top edge gilt, remainder uncut. A lovely copy. "Beginning in 1891, William James gave frequent lectures to teachers in which he explained the psychology he had developed in his "Principles of Psychology" and offered suggestions on applying the science of psychology to the art of education. Similarly, beginning in 1895, James delivered a series of lectures to college students -- generally at schools for women -- on education and its purposes. In 1899, James gathered both sets of lectures together and published them as "Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals." The book was read widely and became financially successful for James." (R. Friedman). This copy's margins are considerably larger than other copies we have seen.

Publisher's green printed wrappers, cover with red lettering and black art nouveau designs. Top corner a bit bent else a very good copy. D. M. Campana was an Italian-born American who studied in Venice and later taught art in Chicago. He also founded a company that sells art supplies (still extant). His specialty was the painting of China porcelain. "There is scarcely a china painter who does not know the name of D.M. Campana for it has been one of the most prominent in the field for well over half a century. Mr. Campana founded the Campana Art Company at the turn of the century with china painting materials as its specialty. Has developed his own line of excellent china colors which he used in painting all his fine works and which are sold with his name exclusively... He won many medals and prizes for his most unusual approach in this medium. His method of painting was to apply the… Read More

Description:
N.P.: N.P., [1965?]. First edition of this set of 10 woodblock images of American soldiers going into the fields in Vietnam. All are marked A[rtist] [Proof] thus none are numbered. All have a title under the image and DuBois' signature. All are dated 1981. It seems likely that there were done to illustrate a book. A title would have been nice. As they are all printed on BFK Rives paper, this might be an extra suite given to the author. In any case, although Ted Dubois has not left much to posterity we can clearly see that he was a very good artist with a real connection to the war, perhaps a veteran as well.

With a large and very accomplished woodcut of Donner Lake on the front. Unlike the broadside for the first edition, this iteration printed on both sides. Matted. Very good. While OCLC records four copies of the first editon of this broadside, no copies of this edition are located. According to Dorothy Sloan, a cache of the first edition broadside was found some years ago and they were plentiful on the market for a while. Not so this second edition. The price of the first edition was one dollar but the price for the second edition, the first illustrated edition, was three dollars. McGlashan is herein no longer located in Truckee but has removed himself to Santa Cruz. The recto is filled with descriptive text, including a call for agents to handle the book and the verso is filled with testimonials. Minifie’s professional life predated the separation of the architectural and builders’ professions. In 1837, he announced himself as an architect and builder, advertising as such in the Baltimore Sun in 1841. Perhaps he was better known as an educator, teaching drawing and design in Baltimore Central High School by 1845. He was principal of the Maryland Institute (now MICA) for many years beginning in 1849, also serving as professor of design and drawing. In 1849, he published his Text Book of Geometrical Drawing, Perspective & Shadows, shortly thereafter adding Theory & Application of Color, together amply illustrated with upwards of 50 steel engravings, widely used in schools both in… Read More
