"Violet Alleyn Storey writes, in simple idiom, about New England, Childhood, God, and Flowers" according to Books of the Herald Tribune, Poetry. Signed on the title page by the author, the book may be self-published. Although ex-library, the only evidence is the stamp of the senior-living-center library on the endpapers and title page and a slight shadow on the front cover where a label with the catalog number once existed.

Despire the very faded cover, the interior is in excellent shape. There is a neat name and address in ink of previous owner on the inside endpaper along with a small label from his fraternity.

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1939. First edition. harcover cloth. Very Good. Short stories both famous (e.g. "Rip Van WInkle," "A Simple Heart," The Necklace," "TO Build a FIre," "The Money's Paw," "The Killers," "Big Blonde," etc. ) and obscure by authors known an little known. Although ex-library, so has stamps on endcovers and title page, the library in question was at a senior living center, and books did not circulate much, so there is little appearent wear. Ther is a minor separation of the front cover from the pages.

Andrew Jackson Dowling is generally thought to be the founder of American landscape architecture, introucing the "natural style." THe original "Theory and Practice" was published in 1841. Fred Allen's radio show, a 1940s precursor to television shows commenting on the week's news, was one of the most popular of the time. This book is an autobiographical tale from Allen's early days in radio to national fame with Allen's Alley, the nucleus of his show. The copy is lacking a dust cover, but otherwise in almost perfect shape aside from almost unnoticeable staining on the front cover. The four drawings by Al Hirshfield are a treasure themselves.

One of the great humorous and (sort of) romantic novels of the 1950s, still a terrific read. Words "Boston-Cross Highway" in ink on front endpaper and some pencil markings (see photo).

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1872. Hawthorene's Works: Illustrated Library Edition. Harcover library binding. Very Good. woodcut for frontispiece. Hawthorne's early short stories, originally published in magazines, attracted little attention, but eventually were collected in two separate volumes. Gradually their worth was recognized and today Twice-Told Tales is one of the classics of American Renaissnce literature. This edtition, which includes the stories from both volumes, is an excellent way to refresh your recollectio of the tales or to add to your library. Spine has some fading of gold letteringand wear at the top and bottom, bt the book is still tight after all these years. A previous owner signed the contents page of volume one in an old-fashioned script.
