Presentation inscription probably entered by library staff on front endpaper: "Presented to the Pacific Union Club Library by Mr. W. H. Crocker, 1923." 198pp.; 8vo; original illustrated wrappers, bound in a later photomount pamphlet binder; illustrated with seven engravings, including two full page. Covers age toned at extremities; 1" closed tear at leading margin page 60. Otherwise, pretty well preserved in the binder. Cowan p. 35; Kurutz 37, stating: "Barra according to Cowan, Worked at one time as a saloon keeper catering to the printing trade. These privately printed reminiscences are based on a log or "sea diary," Cowan also states that Barra was a well-known character around San Francisco. .

Vittorini's first novel, written between 1936 and 1937, and first published in the U. S. In 1951 under the title In Sicily. A story about a young man who returns to the mountain village of his youth to reunite with his mother, the friends of his father, and the beauty of the land.
