Laid in is holograph letter on the letterhead of Gotthold's later Foolscap Press in Santa Cruz, California - started in 1990. The letter is to late San Francisco graphic artist, printer, Richard Zybert thanking him for a note, and "I hope you are not disappointed in the change in subject matter . . . We are now finishing the binding of The Man in Asbestos, " etc. ; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; (12) pages; There have always been plenty of frogs in Covelo and this is the short tale of two of them, Gravity and Levity. .

Ex - Pacific Union Club Library with their bookplate front pastedown and little else in the way of library treatments save for a few call numbers on verso of title page, most in pencil. Presentation inscription probably entered by library staff on front endpaper: "Presented to the Pacific Union Club Library by Mr. W. H. Crocker, 1923." 198pp.; 8vo; original illustrated wrappers, bound in a later photomount pamphlet binder; illustrated with seven engravings, including two full page. Covers age toned at extremities; 1" closed tear at leading margin page 60. Otherwise, pretty well preserved in the binder. Cowan p. 35; Kurutz 37, stating: "Barra according to Cowan, Worked at one time as a saloon keeper catering to the printing trade. These privately printed reminiscences are based on a log or "sea diary," Cowan also states that Barra was a well-known character around San Francisco. .

Illustrated with 14 drawings by artist Vivienne Flesher, several of which are printed in multiple colors by a combination of duotone lithography and letterpress. Vittorini's first novel, written between 1936 and 1937, and first published in the U. S. In 1951 under the title In Sicily. A story about a young man who returns to the mountain village of his youth to reunite with his mother, the friends of his father, and the beauty of the land. This special edition is introduced by Ernest Hemingway who much admired the writer's work, and also includes an autobiographical essay by the author which appears with the text for the first time as an afterword. .
