Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Some light spotting to the cloth. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper, with a great inscription. Tenth printing of Michener's first book, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to the actor who created the role of Capt. George Brackett in the original Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical: "To Martin Wolfson,/In a character that does/not appear in this book, you/catch the precise & wonderful/spirit of what I was trying to/do. I have been deeply impressed/by your art & your sympathetic/understanding. It's been great/fun knowing you & watching your/performances./Your admirer, /James A. Michener." Michener's inscription takes up most of the front endpaper, but just above it is another inscription to Wolfson that we surmise is by the actor William Tabbert who played Lieutenant Joe Cable in the original production and who shared several scenes with Wolfson: "To Martin/In appreciation of his/splendid performance…

Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. The brittleness of the cheap paper, found in every copy we have seen, is much in evidence with a very short tear at the top margin running through nearly every page of the book. The covers also have short tears near the spine at the top and bottom. The upper front corner is bumped, and a darker shade at the very head of the spine indicates that a dustwrapper was present on this book for quite some time. All that is left is the rear flap which is laid in. Good copy only, but a great, early inscription and housed in a Fine box. Michener's first book and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy with a very early INSCRIPTION dated 27 May 1947 SIGNED by the author: "Dear Jim,/The first serious writing I/did came your way. This one/had a better fortune, thanks to the/passing of time and some millions of/acres of the Pacific. It's been a treat knowing you./Jim Michener." We can only speculate who Jim was, but obviously he was of some…
