London: IPC Magazines Ltd, 1977. First Printing. Folding Fanzine. Good+. Peter Kodick (photographer of Rotten poster). 4to fanzine that folds out to a 24" x 36" poster. On verso, articles cover the record labels, the shops, the venues, etc., for a one-stop guide to becoming a punk. Bands covered include the usual British acts (Sex Pistols, Stranglers, Damned, Clash) as well as those lower on the marquee (Finchley Mob, Snatch, Chelsea, Eater, Radiators from Outer Space, and Brisbane's the Saints), along with the New York bands. Oddly, progenitors the Ramones appear to have been blacklisted. Lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photography. Two 1.5" splits where folds meet at center of poster; pinholes in corners; a couple short, old tape repairs. Price 30p on front cover, top corner. A deliberately sensational publication that appears marketed as much to the followers of London's outlandish punk scene as to tourists. A scarce publication, perhaps a one-off.

Tokyo: TRA, 1985. First printing. Sealed audio cassette in wood box. Fine/Box Near Fine. 60 minute music cassette tape. The cassette, sealed in plastic-foil, is wrapped in Japanese newspaper within a 6" by 4" cigar-style wood box (cedar) with a printed label with lettering and decorative motive in red, white, and blue. Also includes four postcards. Condition of all is quite nice, with just a suggestion of age-toning to newspaper. Issued by the noted comics publisher.One of the most influential, and certainly the most enigmatic, of Japan's post-punk generation, Mute Beat remains an ongoing inspiration for those who know. Printed seal on box is priced 1,600 yen; "produced by TRA Project.

Rochester: The Case-Hoyt Corporation, 1928. First Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Unpaginated. Filled with illustrations of type faces, half-tone options, and other offerings for compositors. Bound in black textured notebook bound with two posts, printed title label mounted on front cover. A half inch closed tear to fore-edge of title page, which also has the name of a former owner in ink, else Fine. A scarce catalog of type specimens, ornaments, dingbats and related printing. One of the half-tone options utilizes Paramount movie starlet Esther Ralston, whose fame faded with the talkies. Thus,we've dated this catalog to the late 1920s.

London: Bancroft & Co. (Publishers) Ltd, 1960. First Thus. Stiff illustrated paper-covered boards. Artia, per V. Kubarta. Oblong 8vo. With eight pop-up tableaux, each presented as a diorama with the page on the left acting as a backdrop. One pop-up features a red cloth cord. Small ink inscription on front cover ("for Leah"), along with a mellowed crease to left of table. All pop-ups but the front cover and first page in good working order. An elaborate production, printed in Czechoslovakia, that presents a triumph of paper engineering.

Standard promotional booklet with excellent photographs depicting industry, some natural wonder and residences of Col. C. W. Griggs, Henry Hewitt, Nelson Bennett, Mayor Campbell, L. R. Manning, Chester Thorne, et al. Later, author Pratt lwrote the text for "Art Work of Tacoma and Vicinity, Washington" (Racine: Harney Photogravure Co., 1907). Uncommon. Not in SMITH or SOLIDAY. Now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve with acid-free backing.

Tacoma: Tacoma Commercial Club and Chamber of Commerce, 1912. First Editon. Stiff Illustrated Wraps. Very Good. 4to. Pp. 33. Lavishly filled with colored black & white photography of Tacoma industry, neighborhoods, natural wonders, and more. Double-page bird's eye view of Tacoma at center. Stiff illustrated wrappers with colored photographs. Slight edge-wear, scuffs; withal, a bright, well-preserved copy. Of notable interest are the centerfold bird's eye view of Tacoma, looking northwestern from Wapato Waterway, and the many gorgeous photos of ships and prominent residences. Smith cites a promotional with the same title, with the typo in the title ("It's" as a mistaken contraction), that was printed by Lowman and Hanford. The edition at hand was printed by Riddle Brothers, Chicago. That said, we're ascribing the Charles Smith citation with the suspicion that Lowman printed a subsequent edition. SMITH, 10106. In a bright, well-designed jacket. Two hundred copies of this hardcover first-edition are numbered and signed by the poet; this is one of them. An attractive, well-designed book. The well-published poet's offerings, presented here by the press for which he serves as editor. A handsome production. Dust jacket now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve. Introduction by R. Brimley Johnson. Vellum backstrip over green paper covered boards, titles and rules in gilt, leaves deckle-edged. Private press edition limited to 500, this copy hand numbered 499. Spine, boards and head edge lightly soiled, damp stain to cover, lower corners rubbed through, binding tight, leaves crisp and bright. The poet and essayist's first foray into narrative prose. Text reprinted from the 1798 edition. Beautifully produced at Golden Cockerel under Robert Gibbings.

Book with a touch of dust soiling to top edge, else Fine. Dust jacket with a closed one-inch tear on the top edge of front panel. A superb copy of prose from Amiri Baraka, whose evolution from Beat writer to Black Nationalist to ardent Marxist warranted the appelation firebrand, while his body of work ranged from brilliant to writings less favorably reviewed. Stanley Crouch is on record as noting Baraka's sharpest work was written up to the late 1960s, including this title.

An eminently presentable copy, fresh and bright. The dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, archival sleeve.

Lavishly illustrated with color photographs. Of an edition limited to 600 copies, this is number 29. Signed by the author in Chinese characters and English. A paper bookmark labeled "errata" is laid in, printed mostly in Chinese. Bound in black cloth with gilt lettering/characters stamped on front cover and spine. A wonderful slice of used- and antiquarian-bookselling in the early "aughts," (assuming the information was collected and photos were taken just prior to publication). Bookshops covered feature a preponderance of California (esp. Bay Area) booksellers, but Henry Sotheran is featured, as is Booked Up, Baldwin's Book Barn, etc. With a nice treatment of the late Peter Howard at Serendipity. With the stamp of Jiujiya & Co. inside the front wrapper. This copy is from the inventory of Los Angeles bookseller William Dailey, who noted in his description the book was acquired with other Bierce titles owned by Bierce's secretary, Carrie Christiansen. We bought several of those, which were inscribed by Bierce to Christiansen; this copy without indication of provenance. Christiansen entered public consciousness when news of Bierce's 1913 disappearance emerged; she had been his last correspondent, and received his last letters. The sole heir of Bierce's estate, Christiansen committed suicide in San Francisco, 1920.BAL, 1109, in a variant wrapper lacking date and "No. 19 Series of American Novels." JOSHI and SCHULTZ, A6e.
